Is Veganism really healthy? Certainly not when you’re eating fake meat! Fake meat is ultra processed, it’s full of additives and preservatives, contains inflammatory oils, it’s high in salt and processed oils. This type of food can do more harm than good, and it’s not necessarily helpful to the environment either.
There’s an easy way to see whether food is edible - just let your food rot. If the bacteria and mould will eat the food, then it’s edible (when it was fresh). If the bacteria won’t touch it, then you shouldn’t either!!
If you are choosing to eat a plant-based meal, choose REAL plant proteins such as organic tofu, tempeh, beans and pulses.

Do probiotics work for everybody with IBS?
You might have tried probiotics in the past and found an improvement with some brands, but worse symptoms or no improvement with other brands. This is because everybody's gut microbiome is different.
There are trillions of bacteria living in the gut, symbiotically with you! They have been colonising since before you were born. Most bacteria are friendly and they help keep you healthy by helping you digest nutrients, making certain nutrients for you, protecting you against harmful pathogens and training your immune system to be more resilient and less over-reactive.
In IBS (irritable bowel syndrome - a blanket diagnosis for people who suffer from gut issues like bloating, gas, constipation and diarrhoea), there is often an overgrowth of bacteria.
This overgrowth happens when the delicate harmony of the microbiome is disrupted. This can happen due to poor digestion, food poisoning/gastritis, too much raw food, excess alcohol consumption and high stress!
Sometimes by adding more bacteria in the form of probiotics just doesn't help.
The key is to address the root cause of the bacterial overgrowth first, before repopulating the gut with probiotics. If you don't do that, then the probiotics probably won't help resolve your IBS.
DM me if you want to get to the bottom of your IBS for good ☺️✌️🦠
P.S. the low FODMAP diet doesn't actually solve IBS and can make IBS worse in the long term

🤰Should you go on the low FODMAP diet?🫃
The low FODMAP diet is probably one of the hardest diets to do, simply because most of the foods that cause problems are HEALTHY, yet SO many practitioners recommend it 🤦🤷 new research shows it may not be as helpful as initially thought.
FODMAP is an acronym for different types of fermentable sugars, which are found in various foods such as fruit, vegetables, legumes and grains, for example apples, asparagus, onions, garlic, beans and nuts. Cutting out foods that are high in these sugars makes life extremely difficult, especially if you're cutting out unhealthy processed food to focus on whole, fresh food.
The reason why cutting these foods out may help to alleviate digestive symptoms of bloating, gas, diarrhoea, pain is because the bacteria in the gut thrive off of FODMAPs. By cutting FODMAPS out, you starve the bacteria out. HOWEVER, I do not recommend using the low FODMAP diet long term because you also starve out the good bacteria. This can lead to further imbalances in gut bacteria which may lead to worse IBS in the future.
If you suffer from IBS, I recommend that you work with a Nutritional Therapist that is up to date with the latest scientific research, to help you get to the root cause of your IBS.
I hope that helps!

☕ why you should limit your coffee intake ☕
Caffeine raises your fight or flight hormones, cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline. These hormones are needed so you can tackle the challenges of your day, but you really don't need them raising too much because it can contribute to feelings of anxiety and irritability.
It also takes up to 12 hrs for caffeine to be detoxified and cleared from your system, so if you're having coffee after noon, it may have an impact on your sleep quality. I found that I got more REM and deep sleep, and I slept more solidly throughout the night.
Caffeine is also a laxative and can cause loose bowels and abdominal pain. This is obviously unpleasant but it can also make your digestive system work too fast - leading to malabsorption, dehydration and loss of minerals. Coffee can bind to essential minerals which can lead to deficiencies.
I know, I know. I love coffee too, it tastes delicious! And it's rich in polyphenols! Try having decaf for most of your coffees to reduce the impact on your health, but remember, decaf still has caffeine so monitor your symptoms. I also saved a lot of money in January from coffee!! 💸
Will you try giving up coffee? ☕🤗

💖 Self love Sunday 💖
In clinic this week, recognising the need for self love and caring for oneself was a common theme.
Over Christmas and New Year, many of us felt that we had fell off the "bandwagon" and indulged a little "too much" - this is completely ok! Too many of us make ourselves feel guilty for just... living a life.
Forgive and be kind to yourself ❤️
I believe it IS a form of self love when you listen to your body and recognise when you do not have the capacity to do everything, and letting go when you need to.
When you're feeling demotivated and low, reserve your precious energy for the essentials. Grab a takeaway and relax, it's going to be fine.
Living well is not straightforward. It's a wobbly journey and full of peaks and troughs! It's not easy to be 💯 all the time. When you feel a wobble coming on, know that you can pick yourself back up again, and again. The more you do it, the more you will bounce back. You are strong and resilient.
When you feel low, I would like you to think about how you feel and what you think your body needs. Write it all down. How does the food you are eating make you feel? Do certain foods energise you or deplete you? Simply having an awareness of how foods make you feel in the moment, helps you make better choices later.
Once you have an understanding of what nourishes you, use food as a tool for self-love. Feed yourself the food your body deserves and needs, because you are worthy. Cook yourself a delicious and nutritious meal and enjoy it! Love your body and all it does for you, because it's the only one you have.
Here for you if you need me.
Lots of love, Laura 💖

✨3 reasons why you might be bloating✨
1. Not chewing properly - digestion starts in your mouth. If you're rushing your food or eating on the go, you're unlikely to breakdown your food into tiny particles. You need to help your digestive system by making it as easy as possible to extract the nutrients into your bloodstream. If you don't, then food will sit in your gut, causing bloating.
2. Digestive insufficiency - very common cause whereby individuals have a lack of digestive enzymes and/or stomach acid. Both are needed to breakdown food. This can be due to stress, malnutrition and leaky gut.
3. Bacterial overgrowth - when food hangs around in the gut and not properly digested, then bacteria will take their chance to ferment the food instead. Causing gas production in your abdomen.
Luckily, bloating can be solved and you don't need to suffer forever!! Also, I can tell you that I never recommend the low FODMAP diet as a solution!

✨ The Gut-Skin Axis ✨
Far too many focus on topical solutions for skin problems like acne, eczema, psoriasis, dry and oily skin, and more.
Symptoms on the surface of the skin are often signs that something is not quite right underneath.
When the body has excess inflammation, it pushes these inflammatory chemicals to the surface away from vital organs to protect itself.
My job is to find out why this is happening and correct those root cause issues.
I had a wonderful talk this morning with @soph.knows on IG Live 😍 we spoke about how gut health and nutrition impacts the skin, and there was so much to talk about! There are so many ways food impacts skin health, one of which is gut health.
✨ Poor digestion - by not digesting properly, you won't absorb the nutrients needed for good skin health
✨ Imbalances in gut bacteria - these little microbes have a profound effect on our health, and research has found that IBS is very common in individuals with skin disorders.
✨ Hormone recycling - imbalanced hormones are implicated in PCOS, which is a common cause of adult acne. Poor gut health may lead to excess recycling of used hormones, which might lead to excess androgenic hormones.
✨ Imbalanced immunity - 70% of the immune system is based in the gut. Poor gut health may lead to tendencies for the immune system to overreact to allergens that exacerbate eczema.
✨ Leaky gut - this is a common problem especially in individuals with IBS and food sensitivities. This leads to increased crossover of poorly digested foods, bacteria and debris to the blood stream. This leads to inflammation which may impact the skin.
✨ Inflammatory foods and drinks may also exacerbate skin conditions by causing inflammation, e.g. refined sugar and carbs, processed foods, inflammatory oils, alcohol.
