✨ The Gut-Skin Axis ✨
Far too many focus on topical solutions for skin problems like acne, eczema, psoriasis, dry and oily skin, and more.
Symptoms on the surface of the skin are often signs that something is not quite right underneath.
When the body has excess inflammation, it pushes these inflammatory chemicals to the surface away from vital organs to protect itself.
My job is to find out why this is happening and correct those root cause issues.
I had a wonderful talk this morning with @soph.knows on IG Live 😍 we spoke about how gut health and nutrition impacts the skin, and there was so much to talk about! There are so many ways food impacts skin health, one of which is gut health.
✨ Poor digestion - by not digesting properly, you won't absorb the nutrients needed for good skin health
✨ Imbalances in gut bacteria - these little microbes have a profound effect on our health, and research has found that IBS is very common in individuals with skin disorders.
✨ Hormone recycling - imbalanced hormones are implicated in PCOS, which is a common cause of adult acne. Poor gut health may lead to excess recycling of used hormones, which might lead to excess androgenic hormones.
✨ Imbalanced immunity - 70% of the immune system is based in the gut. Poor gut health may lead to tendencies for the immune system to overreact to allergens that exacerbate eczema.
✨ Leaky gut - this is a common problem especially in individuals with IBS and food sensitivities. This leads to increased crossover of poorly digested foods, bacteria and debris to the blood stream. This leads to inflammation which may impact the skin.
✨ Inflammatory foods and drinks may also exacerbate skin conditions by causing inflammation, e.g. refined sugar and carbs, processed foods, inflammatory oils, alcohol.
