"I find filming on film an extremely exciting and positive experience. What has been seen for years as some sort of a stubborn, nostalgic love for film amongst filmmakers is proving to be a very viable quest to deliver incredible cinematic experiences.

When you shoot on 65mm 5-perf film, and watch it in a cinema, you witness something that you will see nowhere else. There's a quality and a depth to the image that is just unprecedented, and therefore so much more special. The moment you go to an even bigger format, like IMAX 15-perf film, the image depth and color depth are even more astounding to behold."

"There's nothing quite like the feeling of shooting skateboarding on film. There's a certain feeling when you hear the camera start rolling that puts you in this zone where you and the skater know you have to make every take count. We shot this over a couple of cold winter days, which when paired with the grain of film and the gritty backdrop of New York, makes for an almost melancholic feel that's pretty hard to beat. '"Triumph" was in a way my graduation project. Not in the collegic sense, but in the creative sense. Telling a story about silencing the noise, doubt, naysayers, and just going for it. Trusting your heart, and throwing your hat over the wall. In order for me to have made "Triumph", I had to go through that exact process as well, silencing the noise, and trusting my gut. I chose to shoot on film simply because it just felt right, plus no one else would have allowed me to do it that way. So I put my money where my mouth was, and got to work. I'm sincerely thankful for every crew and cast member that believed in my vision and jumped onboard, no questions asked –– for that I am eternally grateful."

"'In Tandem' combines a performance by @thuslovemusic with a campy narrative imagining the band as masked tourists in their hometown of Brattleboro, VT. We wanted the narrative thread to feel like a home movie, so DP @darylpittman shot on S8mm film, while the establishing and performance sections are on 16mm film. Eventually the masked characters find abandoned instruments in a parking lot and play the remainder of the song, thereby becoming the band.”

"Since we wanted to capture the raw struggle in an organic, imperfect way it was a no-brainer to shoot on film. We wanted to create a huge contrast between the first part of struggle and the second part of weightlessness. We loved the way Sandgren and Chazelle changed format and stock throughout First Man to reinforce the character's emotional state. We took inspiration from that and went all the way from handheld 500T 16mm Bolex in the beginning of the struggle to 250D 35mm in stab-head in the second part" - @kornstrand

"We wanted to shoot on film because of how the process and medium are reflected in Hiut’s approach to how they make their jeans. Everything is hand-manufactured using quality denim from around the world which requires extra time and consideration during production. You can literally feel the difference in texture with their jeans and the rare imperfections of a hand-woven group of threads. It all adds to the character and quality of the item. Film is so much like this. A thoughtful, considered medium that embraces imperfections in the most beautiful way. For us, this was a no brainer to shoot this on 16mm, and the results as always blew us away."

"We wanted to shoot on film for multiple reasons. The African sun can be pretty harsh and unforgiving, especially shooting daytime exteriors – on film, however, it looks great. 2perf also gave us just the right amount of grit for this project. Surprisingly it also became a tool when shooting with hyped-up teenagers – when they heard the film rolling, they realized that it really meant something and focused. Looking back, it would have been a very different film on any other format. "

"I shot on the slower 16mm film stocks (mostly 50D) for this piece as it gave me the softness and density I was looking for. Along with the way it rendered skin tones and handled highlights, this format felt the most organic and true to the environment.
⠀
Combining this stock with the Canon 11.5-138 zoom which inherently has a warmth and softness to it allowed me to sit back and be a little more observational than I generally would as the aim was to allow moments to develop naturally as nothing was scripted. The majority was shot at T5.6 / 8 for depth but on the longer end of the zoom the shallow depth of field helped with the intimacy when capturing closeups quickly."

"We shot these two music videos / documentary over the course of two weeks in and around Colombia. Normally we use our ARRI SR3 to cover the celluloid with magic, but this time, our common camera would be too heavy and uncomfortable for this project. So we jump back in time and used a Bolex. It was a curse and a blessing at the same time. The Bolex is flexible, light and easy to carry, but we kind of felt like in a lottery. Did the Camera actually work? Is the Material worth anything in the final? Fear and terror has spread. But the Bolex performed extraordinary and the Material looks glorious! Of course..."

"When the DP and I talked about shooting a short in Tokyo, we only had one thing clear: we were going to shoot on film. Then Ana and I started writing the short.
⠀
I think film is the most beautiful format. It’s spellbinding. Every work -whether it’s a short, a feature, a video art piece, or anything else- looks better when it’s shot on film. That´s how I see it. But to me it’s perhaps not so much why we shot on film as why shouldn´t we have. I learnt to shoot with an old 16mm soviet camera in Film School and I got hooked to it from the very first moment I loaded that heavy machine. My first choice has always been film ever since.

Nevertheless, what I love the most about working with film is how shootings are structured, that particular way crew members have of interacting with each other. There are always budget limitations, which means there’s only a certain amount of film. That forces me and the whole crew to focus on what we’re doing, work hard and be as prepared as we need to effectively capture the action on the first take, if possible.

When the film is running, there’s tension, there’s adrenaline. At that moment, both crew and talents are bound together by the celluloid, we’re all one, and we know we have to make it right because we never know if we’ll have a second chance; we need to give our 110%, we need to communicate well, trust each other and offer our very best.

It’s the best feeling in the world."
