"I was born in Los Angeles so I leapt at the opportunity to shoot a portrait of my hometown on film. That late afternoon light; the way the sun stretches to the horizon in Chinatown, A Woman Under the Influence, and The Graduate. You only ever see that on film. I wanted that. ⠀ I asked the directors, PHAM and John Merizalde, to describe the tone and feel of each storyline in one or two words; to translate these touchstones, I assigned an array of film stocks (5203, 5207, 5219, 5294), processing (pushing, pulling, and cross), and filtration. For example, I processed normal the fine grain 5203 for the laid-back Malibu storyline to differentiate the more energetic Venice that I pulled and overexposed another stop on 5207, exaggerating the differences in saturation, contrast, and grain between the two. ⠀ My aim was to keep the piece consistently colorful while using the differences in grain to distinguish the environments.
