#OnThisDay in 1936, Buddy Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas.
Buddy lived just 22 years, but influenced many of the biggest rock and roll stars over the years, including Elvis, The Beatles and even Weezer who released a hit song named after him on what would have been his 58th birthday in 1994.
Buddy was killed in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper on February 3, 1959. The crash was caused by inclement weather and an inexperienced 21-year-old pilot who was not qualified to fly in low visibility.
Don McLean's 1972 classic "American Pie" is all about that fateful plane crash. Contrary to its lyrics, "the day the music died", Buddy's music is still alive and still kicks.
Hope you're rockin' in Paradise, Buddy!

#OnThisDay in 1951, Chrissie Hynde (of The Pretenders) was born in Akron, Ohio.
Early in her life, Chrissie became interested in hippie counterculture, Eastern mysticism, and vegetarianism. Chrissie was also caught up in the Kent State Massacre on May 4, 1970 in which the boyfriend of one of her friends was among the four shot dead by National Guard troops.
Chrissie moved to London in 1973 eventually landing a position at music magazine, the NME. Unable to obtain a work permit, Chrissie attempted to convince both Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols to marry her! It didn't work out and Chrissie briefly returned to the US in 1975 before going back to Europe the following year.
Chrissie met bass player Pete Farndon in London in 1978 and they put together the Pretenders shortly afterwards along with James Honeyman-Scott on guitar and Martin Chambers on drums. The Pretenders lineup would change repeatedly over the next decade with Chrissie being the only original member. Their first signature single "Brass in Pocket (I'm Special)" hit no. 1 in the UK in 1980.
Chrissie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Pretenders. In 2015, Chrissie published an autobiography, "Reckless: My Life as a Pretender".
In July 2020, the Pretenders released their 11th and latest studio album "Hate For Sale" to positive reviews.

#OnThisDay in 1976, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis reunited 20 years after their partnership broke up on Jerry's Labour Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Frank Sinatra surprised Jerry by bringing out Dean. Jerry, who was notorious for hating surprises, cursed Frank under his breath and wiped away a tear as he embraced his old comedy partner.
Throughout the 50s, Martin & Lewis were America's most popular comedy duo, with smooth-talking Dean playing the straight man to wacky Jerry in nightclub acts, radio spots, TV appearances, and several movies.
Tensions rose and tempers flared often behind the scenes and after 10 years together, they called it quits professionally and personally in July 1956.
Luckily for Frank, the surprise paid off and Dean and Jerry reconciled after 20 years of separation. The duo reunited a few more times before Dean Martin died on Christmas Day, 1995.
Jerry Lewis wrote a best-selling book about their partnership, "Dean & Me (A Love Story)" in 2005.
Jerry Lewis passed away in 2017.

#OnThisDay in 1997, Elton John sung a revised version of "Candle In The Wind" at Princess Diana's funeral. This rendition replaced "Goodbye Norma Jean" with "Goodbye England's Rose," and became the best-selling single of all time in the UK.
Diana, Princess of Wales, lost her life along with her partner Dodi Fayed in a car crash following a paparazzi pursuit through the streets of Paris August 31, 1997.
Elton, a longtime friend, was asked to sing at the funeral and asked his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to revise the lyrics to his 1973 hit "Candle in the Wind" which was originally a tribute to Marilyn Monroe.
Elton refused to ever play the song again after the funeral, and radio stations ceased playing it after four weeks as a mark of respect.

#OnThisDay in 1946, Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar (a set of islands off the coast of Africa).
Freddie is still regarded as one of the greatest lead singers in the history of rock music and was known for his flamboyant stage persona and 4-octave vocal range. He also designed the band's logo known as the "Queen's Crest".
Freddie Mercury died of bronchio-pneumonia on November 24, 1991, just one day after he publicly announced he was HIV-positive.
He was only 45 years old.

#OnThisDay in 1968, “Street Fighting Man” by The Rolling Stones was banned by radio stations in Chicago in the wake of riots in the city during the Democratic National Convention that took place a week earlier. The song was released as the first single from their "Beggars Banquet" album only four days earlier.
Radio stations in some other cities followed suit and it caused the song to stall out at no. 48 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Mick Jagger welcomed the ban saying: "The last time they banned one of our records in America it sold a million." Keith Richards lists "Street Fighting Man" among his favourite Rolling Stones songs.

#OnThisDay in 1959, New York City Top 40 station WABC banned Bobby Darin‘s “Mack The Knife” in the wake of some stabbing incidents in the city.
The song admittedly does contain some graphic lyrics such as: "When the shark bites with his teeth, dear/Scarlet billows start to spread" and "On a sidewalk, blue Sunday mornin’/Lies a body just oozin’ life."
The BBC in England also banned Darin’s single, yet it went to no. 1 in both the U.S. and U.K. It also earned Bobby the Grammy award for Record of the Year.

#OnThisDay in 1979, it was "Disco Demolition Night" at Comiskey Park in Chicago, where the White Sox and Detroit Tigers were playing a double-header.
The plan was to blow up (literally) a bunch of disco albums between games, but it went horribly wrong.
The explosion blew a hole in the field and sent shards of vinyl records flying all over the park. Thousands of fans became unruly and rushed the field tearing up bases, climbing the foul poles, storming and wrecking the team dugouts and forcing the White Sox to forfeit the second game.
Disco Demolition Night went down in history as the beginning of the end of Disco…for a few decades anyway.
The Disco sound has enjoyed a resurgence over the last decade. Last summer for Record Store Day, Foo Fighters renamed themselves "Dee Gees" and released "Hail Satin", a hit album featuring their covers of classic Bee Gees disco hits.
