#OnThisDay in 1976, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis reunited 20 years after their partnership broke up on Jerry's Labour Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Frank Sinatra surprised Jerry by bringing out Dean. Jerry, who was notorious for hating surprises, cursed Frank under his breath and wiped away a tear as he embraced his old comedy partner.
Throughout the 50s, Martin & Lewis were America's most popular comedy duo, with smooth-talking Dean playing the straight man to wacky Jerry in nightclub acts, radio spots, TV appearances, and several movies.
Tensions rose and tempers flared often behind the scenes and after 10 years together, they called it quits professionally and personally in July 1956.
Luckily for Frank, the surprise paid off and Dean and Jerry reconciled after 20 years of separation. The duo reunited a few more times before Dean Martin died on Christmas Day, 1995.
Jerry Lewis wrote a best-selling book about their partnership, "Dean & Me (A Love Story)" in 2005.
Jerry Lewis passed away in 2017.
