#OnThisDay in 1997, Elton John sung a revised version of "Candle In The Wind" at Princess Diana's funeral. This rendition replaced "Goodbye Norma Jean" with "Goodbye England's Rose," and became the best-selling single of all time in the UK.
Diana, Princess of Wales, lost her life along with her partner Dodi Fayed in a car crash following a paparazzi pursuit through the streets of Paris August 31, 1997.
Elton, a longtime friend, was asked to sing at the funeral and asked his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to revise the lyrics to his 1973 hit "Candle in the Wind" which was originally a tribute to Marilyn Monroe.
Elton refused to ever play the song again after the funeral, and radio stations ceased playing it after four weeks as a mark of respect.
