#OnThisDay in 1946, Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar (a set of islands off the coast of Africa).
Freddie is still regarded as one of the greatest lead singers in the history of rock music and was known for his flamboyant stage persona and 4-octave vocal range. He also designed the band's logo known as the "Queen's Crest".
Freddie Mercury died of bronchio-pneumonia on November 24, 1991, just one day after he publicly announced he was HIV-positive.
He was only 45 years old.
