Curiosity Rover Update for July 13, 2022: Sols 3532-3533
A Rover-Sized Boulder
Written by Lauren Edgar, Planetary Geologist at USGS Astrogeology Science Center
"Curiosity is back on the road, but some interesting boulders caught our attention and led to a short detour. The team was already planning to divert to the southwest to get some imaging of nearby cliffs, but the large boulders that have tumbled down provide a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. Boulders like the large one shown in the above Navcam image (now named “Ilha Novo Destino”) can help inform our understanding of the upcoming stratigraphy, so we thought it was worth a trip to this “new island destination” for the weekend."
"But first, there’s plenty of science to be done in our workspace before we get to the boulders. Today’s two-sol plan focused on DRT, MAHLI, and APXS on the bedrock right in front of the rover, including the interesting vein and fracture patterns shown in the foreground of the above Navcam image. Today we planned 3 MAHLI imaging targets and 2 APXS targets to assess the sedimentary textures and composition of bedrock and veins . . ."
" . . . The ENV theme group planned several environmental monitoring activities to search for dust devils and monitor dust and clouds in the atmosphere. On the second sol, Curiosity will drive to a parking spot right in front of these boulders to prepare for the weekend plan. Can’t wait to see this rover-sized boulder up close!"

Awesome news from Tankers Reef!
All that hard work culling urchins has paid off. According to our most recent survey, the density of giant kelp went from just over 12 stipes per transect to almost 50 stipes per transect and urchins stayed way below the two per meter threshold. No changes were observed at the control site.
Congrats to Keith Rootsaert and all the Giant Giant Kelp Restoration Project volunteer divers who put in the hard work culling urchins! And to all the Reef Check divers who volunteered their time to collect this important data so that it can be shared with all of you!

Some weeks ago on expedition with @biganimals_expeditions we encountered this beautiful female whale shark. I sent the photo to scientist @deni.ramirez.macias who studies them and was super excited when she told me that the whale shark hasn’t been identified before so I got to name her. I named her Fibi after the little girl at @sv_sol_searcher who has a cheerful and brave spirit. Little is known about this adult females, and hopefully this ID contributes to knowing a little bit more about the species in the Sea of Cortez.
I don’t think this is a great picture, but it is meaningful to me. The spots behind the gills have a unique pattern in each individual, so this picture can be used to identify at an individual level. I’m happy to share with you the pic that helped identified Fibi. I hope we see her again some day! #whaleshark#tiburonballena#id#baja#seaofcortez#gulfofcalifornia#sharks#marinescience#citizenscience#marineconservation#marinebiology
📢HOT OFF THE PRESS! Restoration of Northern California Bull Kelp Forests Report available NOW!
Starting in 2020, Reef Check Foundation worked in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the California Ocean Protection Council, The Nature Conservancy, Noyo Center for Marine Science, and commercial fishermen in a collaborative, community-based approach to restore kelp forest habitat in Mendocino County.
Results from 15 months of restoration efforts at Noyo Bay and four months at Albion Cove are now available.!

Urgent Call for Conservation Volunteers!
The Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society is in urgent need of volunteers to support a large monitoring project of the highly invasive European Green Crab in #BoundaryBay.
If not controlled, this crab will decimate the crucial eelgrass beds, salt marsh, and all the marine invertebrates in the area.
The Fraser Delta (incl. Boundary Bay) is the top-rated Important Bird Area of 600 designated sites in Canada. Protecting this site is essential for B.C.'s biodiversity!
To get involved, please contact Marg Cuthbert of The Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society by email at [email protected]
