I used to think that blocks, wedges, pillows, and blankets were the only yoga tools. Now I have added mirrors and proprioception to the list.
Proprioception is awareness of body position and movement in space. It is what you think you look like space versus how you appear. Warrior 2/Virabhadrasana II comes to mind. Practitioners tend to lower the backhand or lift it high without realizing it. In the class, the instructor would cue it or adjust it.
Independent practice is an entirely different ball game. How do we go on improving form without anyone being there to assist? Mirrors and cameras can provide that feedback. You can see in the picture how I check my form in the mirror as it does not always match how I think I look. I try to correct what I can, plan what I need to work on, and then continue enjoying my practice because I GET TO DO IT! (see Monday post). Also, I do not have a wall of mirrors in my home gym. I bought five-dollar ones in the store and placed them around the room so I could see myself from most sides. It took a bit of adjustment with time by trial and error, but now it has become my own "sensei".
