Video by @timlaman | Synchronizing their display, a pair of male Goldie’s birds of paradise try to attract females. This is one of the bird of paradise species with the most limited home range, found on only two small islands off the far eastern end of Papua New Guinea. They are endangered because of habitat loss and their narrow home range. Birds of paradise are ambassadors for the conservation of the New Guinea region’s great forests, the largest remaining in the entire Asia-Pacific region and which are critical to global climate stability. I filmed this video a few years ago on assignment for Nat Geo and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Together we worked to raise awareness about the importance of these forests and, of course, to show appreciation for these amazing birds of paradise, truly one of the treasures of our planet’s biodiversity. @birdsofparadiseproject#birdofparadise#goldiesbirdofparadise#papuanewguinea#PNG#rainforest#birds#courtship
Photos by @javier_aznar_photography | The Chocó rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places in the world. Extending from Panama to Ecuador, this forest houses thousands of species of plants and animals. During the last few years, I've photographed some of them, from insects to mammals and fungi to trees. In Ecuador, only 2 to 3% of the original forest is intact due to deforestation from logging, mining, palm oil plantations, and other causes. Meanwhile, as we gradually lose this unique place, hundreds of species unknown to science remain undescribed. Here are some of the inhabitants. These forests are magical. Visitors to Redwood National Park in Northern California contemplate the immensity of the namesake trees. Coast redwoods are the tallest trees on Earth, with the largest specimens topping out at nearly 400 feet (120 meters). The second image is a view of the lush understory of this temperate rainforest. #rainforest#california#redwoodnationalpark
🗣 “There are snakes, spiders, scorpions, and also plants that will cause a rash. There’s small trees with large spikes on them that will straight through your combats and stab into the skin.” Lance Sergeant Woodhouse
@scots_guards , together with a range of other British Army units and our allies from Belize, had to get comfortable being uncomfortable in one of the world’s most unforgiving environments on Exercise Mayan Storm.
Normally based in Yorkshire, the jungle warfare training that these soldiers undertook in the South American country during November and December must have seemed a world away from the norm.
However, the skills and drills that were being reinforced during the package will be invaluable and could make all the difference on operations.

Another morning in Danum Valley, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Love waking up with the gibbons calling from the huge Dipterocarp-trees around me. Peeking out from my tree-blind roughly 60 meters up! Fond memories. This rainforest is estimated to be at least 130 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world (and twice as old as the Amazon rainforest). Extremely rich in biodiversity, Borneo provides habitat for about 15,000 known species offlowering plants, and more than 3,000 tree species, 221 terrestrial mammal species, and 420 bird species. After years of work in Borneo it's one of the places that I truly love! Shot 1995 for @natgeo
