Through #documentaryphotography, Nichole Sobecki brings attention to humanity’s fraught, intimate, and ultimately unbreakable connection to the natural world. Born in New York, she has lived in Nairobi for the past decade. Nichole’s photography has been recognized by the ASME Award, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights prize, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, and Pictures of the Year, among others. Nichole is represented internationally by the photo agency VII, and is a member of Women Photograph and Everyday Africa.
After sharing her career trajectory with us, Nichole will focus on her work documenting the unfolding impacts of the #climate crisis in #Africa through the lens of two projects: Where Our Land Was, which investigates the human consequences of significant environmental change in Somalia, and Forest Guardians, which explores the vital role the #Congo Basin plays in the ecological balance of our planet and those fighting for its future.
The talk will include a Question-and-Answer session moderated by TPS Communications Director @AlexSnyderPhoto. We’ll also be giving away a Sony Zv1 camera to one lucky participant.
This event is free and open to the public. It is made possible with the support of our friends at Sony North America. Please feel free to share the link tinyurl.com/tpsnichole.
Photo by @jasperdoest // A slow shutter speed captures flight patterns of cone-headed bush crickets, commonly called grasshoppers or “nsenene” in Uganda. As their numbers drop, the development of captive-breeding techniques could improve food security, create new sources of income for farmers, and protect wild populations. Follow me @jasperdoest for more images of the wonders of nature and the relationship between humankind and nature. #nsenene#uganda#insects

Photo by @_giuseppenucci // Milan (MI), Italy - December 2021. The test tube containing one of the bees collected by means of a net on the designated site, as part of the biomonitoring activities carried out by the entomologist Ilaria Negri. The sample will be prepared and analysed at the Department of Science and Environment of the Bicocca University in Milan. The department is equipped with a powerful electronic scanning microscope, capable of magnifications reaching down to the nanometer. The most analysed body parts of the bees most are the wings and in particular the edge, where the particulate matter accumulates during the flight. The microscope allows observing ultra-thin powders as well and is equipped with an X-ray microprobe that allows analysing their chemical composition: shape, size and composition of the particulate matter are essential to identify its origin and toxic potential. In 2020 the site hosted 3 beehives at the San Vittore del Lazio waste-to-energy plant. In addition to the installation of the environmental control unit inside the waste-to-energy plant, plant species were planted which are useful for the production of honey by the bees. Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/ Kenya November 2022 – I now have just a couple of places left on a ten day Mara North trip this coming November so if a Predator based trip, focussing primarily on lions, leopards and cheetahs appeals then please do act fast to secure your place. In addition to the predatory cat species countless other opportunities do abound and as always I’m be working hard to ensure that I always get your vehicle in the very best place to maximise your opportunities.
Kenya’s Mara North Conservancy has all of the benefits of the Masai Mara National Reserve, but with none of the drawbacks. Vehicle numbers are strictly limited and so each animal encounter is far more intimate and we are able to work more creatively. In Mara North we are able to drive off road, giving us so much more creativity when it comes to positioning the vehicle for light and perspective. In addition we are not limited by sunrise and sunset times so we are able to leave camp in the dark, and return long after sunset. Most importantly here however are the animals. Generations of great care by the guides and drivers ensures that species like leopards, usually so secretive and hard to find, are incredibly relaxed and accepting of the presence of vehicles.
If an African safari has been on your dream list then why not join me this coming November and let me help you to move your photography onto the next level.

Bifengxia Giant Panda Base in Sichuan Province, China is at the forefront of panda conservation. It is a specialist breeding center and maternity ward for giant pandas. With so few left in the wild, each panda has a specific role to play.

Photo by @paoloverzone | At the Airbus space site in Bremen, Germany—a hub for space technology—industrial manager and scheduler Sian Cleaver stands in front of ESM-3, the service module for the American crewed spacecraft Orion. Produced by the European Space Agency @europeanspaceagency for NASA’s Artemis program, the module will supply electricity, water, and oxygen, as well as temperature and course controls. The ESM-3 is at the start of its integration phase, during which equipment, brackets, and harnesses will be added to the structure. An uncrewed Artemis I lunar mission is planned for early summer; the crewed Artemis III mission, planned for 2025, will see the first woman and first person of color setting foot on the moon. Photo by @thomas.nicolon // Vets feed Pulgita and Willow, two young spider monkeys who were rescued from the wildlife trade. Taricaya is a rescue center located in the Peruvian Amazon. Many young, orphaned or injured spider monkeys are sent there by wildlife authorities, in order to be cared for and then released into the wild. Black spider monkeys are extinct in that area of Peru, because of poaching and habitat loss. // Follow me thomas.nicolon for more conservation stories.
