Photo by @mattiasklumofficial | Stars, satellites, and the aurora borealis congregate over Svalbard, Norway. Shooting stars, in fact, are not stars at all. They are meteors, pieces of interplanetary rock or debris that can break through Earth's atmosphere and be seen briefly in the night sky. I'm not superstitious, but still I make a wish every time I see a star fall. Can’t hurt. Visit @mattiasklumofficial for more images from our projects around the world.

Today we are celebrating and acknowledging #worldenvironmentday!! Vamizi’s Neptune’s Arm is really like exploring underwater heaven on Earth! I treasure the sense of awe and transience in this remarkable place. Vamizi is home to some of the world’s oldest and most pristine coral reefs – a virtual wonderland of marine biodiversity. The Southern Equatorial Current meets the African continent here, bringing with it warm waters and an upwelling of rich nutrients. Sheltered by the coral reefs, the area is an undersea nursery, a critical breeding and birthing ground for hundreds of species of fish and marine mammals. Another image from my Iceland collection. Landmannalaugar shot from a helicopter during an assignment some years ago. This region consists of more geological elements than one can count. Incredible landscape and staggering details everywhere! According to a new green future Index report shared by The World Economic Forum, Iceland is one of the countries best prepared for a green low carbon future. This report measures how countries are reducing their carbon emissions, developing clean energy and innovating in green sectors. The research also looks at environmental protection and government climate policies. #iceland#landmannalaugar#mattiasklum#landscape#fineart#geology@mattiasklumofficial@natgeo@irisalexandrov@alexandrovklumofficial
I found this gorgeous scorpionfish on the house reef of Kri Eco resort in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The reefs below the surface are home to more than 1500 species of fish and around 700 species of reef-building coral, and counting...!
It is of utmost importance to restore and rebuild damaged ecosystems but essential to halt the destruction! By preserving and respecting the remaining beauty on this planet we actually secure long term sustainable success for mankind! The only safe path ahead is to love and enjoy nature in a more thoughtful way anchored in science and "common sense. #rajaampat#indonesia#marine#kriecoresort#ecosystem#paradise#divers#photooftheday#protectbiodiversity#mattiasklum#conservation@natgeo@irisalexandrov@alexandrovklumofficial@thephotosociety
A young asiatic lion devouring a newly caught nilgai calf in front of my camera in Gir National park, India. Most people think of lions as strictly African beasts, but only because they’ve been killed off almost everywhere else. Ten thousand years ago lions spanned vast sections of the globe, and so did people, who—as we multiplied and organized—put pressure on competitors at the top of the food chain. Now lions hold only a small fraction of their former habitat, and Asiatic lions, a subspecies that split from African lions perhaps 100,000 years ago, hang on to an almost impossibly small slice of their former domain. India is the proud steward of these 400 or so lions, which live primarily in a 560-square-mile (1,450-square-kilometer) sanctuary. #asiaticlion#girforest#india#throwback#protectbiodiversity#mattiasklum@natgeo@thephotosociety@irisalexandrov@alexandrovklumofficial
Some of the beautiful but vulnerable corals on Neptune's Arm near the Island of Vamizi, Mozambique. This a sequence from our film Vamizi - Cradle of Coral. (You can watch the entire award-winning documentary on Vimeo.) Vamizi is the largest island in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Its relative isolation from mainland Mozambique has preserved its natural beauty and wildlife. It truly has magnificent coral reefs and is a unique breeding ground for whales, dolphins, turtles and and not least the endangered gray reef sharks. #friendsofvamizi#vamizi#mattiasklum#vamiziisland#oceanconservation#protectbiodiversity@natgeo@irisalexandrov@andbeyondvamizi@alexandrovklumofficial
This photograph of the gigantic Rafflesia pricei flower was taken from within a flower, peeking out through its opening at the dusky rainforest canopy.
This funky flowers rank smell attracts (Swedish photographers) and insects such as blow-flies, which transport pollen from male to female flowers. Photographed on assignment for @natgeo near Tambunan, Sabah Malaysia during my 14 month long expedition 1995-96. #mattiasklum#protectbiodiversity#alexandrovklum#rafflesia#sabah#borneo@irisalexandrov@natgeo@alexandrovklumofficial
