Miami city commissioners approved a plan to move forward with a pilot program to create a homeless encampment on Virginia Key. Video Source: @LouisAguirre with @Local10News.
Miami Waterkeeper is unequivocally opposed to the City of Miami's recent proposal to relocate people experiencing homelessness to Virginia Key's North Point.
The item was supported by Commissioners:
@joecarollonow@iamchristineking@commishdiaz
and (thankfully) was opposed by Commissioners:
@kenrussellmiami@manolo4miami
Here's why we think this is a bad idea:
First and foremost, it is inhumane to leave people experiencing homelessness on an island without transportation, running water, access to food, or other services.
Second, Virginia Key is a historical landmark -- it was the only beach available to Black residents during segregation. The Virginia Key Beach Park Trust just celebrated its 77th birthday on Monday.
Third, Virginia Key is one of the few places left that is relatively undeveloped. It has the City of Miami's only blue water beach, and it still has large, open areas for wildlife and people. Virginia Key is a fragile environment with endangered and threatened species, manatees and dolphins, and opportunities to be in nature like biking, hiking, kayaking, at local businesses like the @vkocfl. BREAKING NEWS 👉👉👉 We are thrilled to share a major victory from our Turkey Point nuclear plant operating license extension challenge today!
After years of legal challenges and our appeal pending for over a year, just this morning the NRC announced that it is reversing itself and repealing the 80-year license extension for Turkey Point.
As you may know, we have been challenging the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's decision to give an operating license to Turkey Point to run until 2052 -- that would make it the nation's first 80-year old nuclear plant.
We challenged this license because the NRC weren't appropriately considering sea level rise or ongoing, site-specific environmental concerns in their license extension decision.
Turkey Point will be back to having its operating license expire in 2032 -- and the NRC will now be requiring a full and updated environmental review for any future license extensions -- the outcome that we have been working for.
This is a big victory for resiliency, safety, and the environment -- and it affects plants around the nation. There's more work on this to come, but today, we celebrate!
Big shout out to our partners at @NRDC and @FriendsoftheEarth for being amazing advocates and partners.
