“I consider myself to be an agent of change, and I have learned that change does not come easy or overnight. Instead, we must actively work to make the world a better, safer place for those who are most vulnerable.” – Ashton Mota, LGBTQ+ rights activist
#wednesdaywisdom We’re all capable of being agents of change! LGBTQ+ rights activist Ashton began locally, starting a gay-straight alliance club at his school. He later became one of the faces of the “Yes on 3” movement, which was started to defend a state law giving people the right to use the bathroom, locker room, or other space designated for the gender with which they identified.
Ashton reminds us that changing the world for the better may seem like a daunting task, but it is possible! Join Roots & Shoots to start making a difference today! LINK IN BIO

🤩 Meet #RSNYLC member, Yoshino “Yoyo” W.! 🤩
Yoyo is a sophomore from San Diego, California. This is her first year on the Roots & Shoots National Youth Leadership Council. Her favorite Roots & Shoots project is “Music for Peace,” through which she compiles videos of herself playing the Koto, or Japanese harp, integrated with nature videos. This project is important to Yoyo because she’s able to incorporate her love of music with a way to help her community. She hopes to expand the project in the future by collaborating with other musicians who have the same vision. Yoyo is passionate about social justice, combating illegal wildlife trade and animal abuse, and mental health. She has led projects to help foster animals, bring music to others, and write letters or support and love to patients in mental facilities and hospitals. Yoyo enjoys dancing and values spending time with her family, friends, and rescue pets.
Meet the rest of the RSNYLC! LINK IN BIO

Just two activists fighting for climate justice: Dr. Goodall & @itssaadamer ✨🍃🌏
For Dr. Goodall’s #BecomingJane exhibit at the @nhmla Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County created in partnership between the @janegoodallinst Jane Goodall Institute and @natgeo@natgeomuseum , we invited climate justice activist Saad Amer to introduce and interview Dr. Goodall about the importance and power of youth in environmental movements, including Jane's program Roots & Shoots USA .
Saad has mobilized millions of young people to vote on issues like climate change and social justice, and works as a consultant to the United Nations . In his speech, he explained how Dr. Goodall inspired much of his love for nature, and shared how her message of hope has motivated him to act locally to impact the world globally. We are the moment, and we are the movement. It's time to rise up and take action!

“The mountain top, for me at least, is making positive impact in my community, knowing that I helped to change not only my life but other people’s lives.” – Khalifa, Roots & Shoots alum
#wednesdaywisdom Khalifa’s childhood dream of following in Dr. Jane’s footsteps led her to join the Roots & Shoots National Youth Leadership Council #rsnylc, participating in many community projects—including a favorite, which involved creating art to send to soldiers in Iraq—and even meeting youth leaders in Tanzania! Today she is studying for her Master’s degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and hoping to one day use stem cells to treat psychiatric and developmental disorders.

You have probably heard the stories of animal shelters emptying out during the pandemic, but unfortunately, as many return to other obligations, the shelters are filling up once again. Staff in animal shelters often deal with more animals than they can manage one-on-one care for, so one Roots & Shoots group from Jupiter, Florida, created a project to help! They made small toys for the animals to play with when staff didn’t have time, and created eye-catching adoption ads to help some of the older residents find their forever homes! LINK IN BIO
