#Chinatowns have been fighting for their survival for decades.
The people running our city refuse to face us while they hide behind zoom meetings.
So we’re creating our own public hearing, our way.
We want to hear from you in person. Come share what Chinatown, the #MegaJail, & our future means to you.
NUBC will archive the community voices in writing and on video.
Meet IN REAL LIFE to celebrate and fight for our communities.
This Is What Community Looks Like. #UNMUTED.

Communities Never Demand For More and Bigger Jails. Foundations, Developers and Politicians do. Everytime they built a new Jail in Chinatown they've built them bigger. Never smaller. Everytime they build a new one, it's supposedly the "best one ever". And Everytime people in these jails suffer, and evertime our community suffers. This jail building cycle is violence against many communities at once.
YOU CAN STOP THIS CYCLE
@gramercy_group will be cutting trees down at the jail site this week. Please come to witness the further destruction of our green spaces. This is part of the City's plan to demolish two huge jails in Chinatown only to build the tallest jail in the world, on the site of the place where FOUR previous jails were built - one larger than the next, and one more dysfunctional that the previous.
We need all of you to bear witness to this act of #violence against our community in the name of jail-building.
Our community should not be once again sacrificed .
Thank you @chrislejohnyc for this photo of #thechinatownten before we entered court today. We got 24 hrs A.C.D's, which means adjourned considering dismissal. Which means those arrested will have their case dismissed in 24 hrs .
#thechinatownten at 1 Centre street to respond to our #disorderlyconduct charge for blocking government employed workers from installing construction fences, in order to demolish the two Chinatown jails. #nonewjails
Tomorrow, Monday May 2nd '22, The Chinatown Ten, will be at court to respond to their "civil disobedience " violation. PRESS CONFERENCE AT 9:AM, at 1 Centre street. All are welcome.
Thankful for the coverage on @cheddar with host Baker , on the subject of Chinatown's pushback on the mega-jail project. #adaptivereuse makes more sense, and the money saved can go to affordable housing.
Why must we drag the bad ideas of the #deblasio administration into the new administration. We're all in agreement that the management of Riker's should not be transferred to communities. The FEDERAL monitor even admonished NYC for ignoring the recommendations made over the last two years. The BETTER solution : Smaller incarceration footprint, adaptively reuse the TWO Chinatown jails (one renovated in 1983, the other also completed in 1983) . These are essentially new buildings that were rotting from the inside as a result of demolition by neglect, and that can be remedied by rehabilitating from the inside out. Do It Now.
Unfortunately we were only able to temporarily pause the construction fences around the jail site. The profiteers @gramercy_group is moving fast to grab their money on this site. The construction fences continue to be built.
It was our supporters like you all who have elevated this story to national news, and for that we Thank You.
We will be updating you shortly on upcoming news and events.
In the meantime, be our eyes and ears. Tag the Mayor, and @nubcnyc about what you observe happening around the Chinatown jail site.
The art affixed to the existing jails will be dismantled and some of it destroyed. The trees will be cut down. Document what you can. We're relying on our army of volunteers.
Please go to @welcome.to.chinatown to donate to their gofundme to support the residents of #78mulberry who may not be able to return to their homes for weeks if not months.
At the scene of the fire with councilmember @chrismartenyc and @janccrc multiple agencies have been in the building all morning. A disabled mother and her son perished in the fire. The apt has extreme clutter, which hampered access. The stuff was pushed through the windows onto the sidewalk by the firemen. D.o.s. cleaned up quickly. 12pm agencies will meet and assess damage. The engineers for d.o.b. and the owner's structural engineer is on sight. 5th floor staircase is completely damaged. There is a hole in the roof of the building. Utilities are turned off. Red cross is assisting in helping ppl. Find accommodations.
CCBA President Raymond Tsang , district leader Victoria Lee also on site. Most tenants are English speaking. Contact @welcome.to.chinatown for upcoming info on fundraising for the families.
