"WE DEMAND: Criminal Justice Reform" below which are bullet points: “End mass incarceration, biased sentencing, and police violence, Discontinue arrests and prosecutions for low-level drug offenses and expunge records of these offenses, and Focus on substantially reducing first-time incarceration and recidivism rates, via options like drug treatment programs.” At the bottom is “Part #4 — Justice Reform”and “WALKING THROUGH The Resolution to End Poverty in Maryland."
"OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM: Disproportionately incarcerates Black Marylanders" below which, it says, “African Americans are about 30% of our state’s population but constituted around 70% of the inmate population in 2019, which is the highest incarceration rate of Black people in the country.”
"OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM: Disproportionately incarcerates people from low-income and/or minority communities" below which, it says, “Black people are two times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people in Maryland.” and "Low-wealth community residents are more likely to have a prison record damage their employment prospects."
"OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM: Lacks programs that re-integrate formerly incarcerated people back into the community" below which are bullet points: “40–50% of new offenders return to prison within 3 years, a much higher rate than other states like Virginia.” and “Maryland has no women’s pre-release facilities that assist with employment, housing, drug treatment, and mental health services after incarceration.”

"WE DEMAND: Racial/Ethnic & Gender Equality" below which it says: “According to the 2020 Census, a majority of people in Maryland are non-white. Our state government must be held accountable for addressing needs and fairly representing this population. Minority and female residents continue to experience a much higher poverty rate than the state as a whole.”
"WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR: Real solutions for poverty in rural areas" below which are bullet points: “Rural poverty persists among Black and Latino/Hispanic Marylanders — those living below the federal poverty line are often residents of rural counties and work in agricultural and other rural industries.”
"WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR: Opportunities and Supports for Women to Support Families" below which are bullet points: “Women who are heads of households disproportionately experience poverty, having a higher poverty rate than the state as a whole. Even in wealthier counties, many female-headed households live below the federal poverty line.”
"WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR: Invest more public funds in infrastructure and services in low-income communities" below which are bullet points: “State and local governments must re-study the needs of poor and low-wealth, non-white people, such as Indigenous Marylanders, who experience the highest levels of poverty in our state — nearly twice the rate of white Maryland residents.”
59 years ago today, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. Quoting the preamble of the Declaration of Independence and Emancipation Proclamation, he also speaks about a "promissory note" that America defaulted on.

Video transcript: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking on August 28, 1963, at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal." I have a dream, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will they be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood? But I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!" This is followed by a text reading, "Poverty and economic inequality cannot be understood apart from a society built on white supremacy."
"Compromising the humanity of people is what has got us here. It's not a time for peaceful negligence or a time for violence. It's time for a Moral Revival!" — Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, Co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign

Today, we honor a 14 year old boy. He was known for defending his mother from her abusive ex-husband, playing pickup baseball games, being a sharp dresser, playing pranks with his cousins when he visited them, and being loved by his peers despite having a persistent stutter from an illness when he was 6 years old.
That boy went into a store alone, where a woman was working. He may have stuttered when he payed the woman at the register. He was most likely alone with the woman less than one minute.
The woman's husband and his half-brother kidnapped the boy 4 days later. The kidnappers tied the boy up, brought him to a barn, tortured him, shot and killed him, and dumped his weighted body in a nearby stream.
Three days later, the boy's mutilated body was found. His body was transported back to where his mother lived. She held an open casket funeral, and thousands of people came to see the evidence of what had been done to the boy.
The boy was Emmett Till who, 67 years ago on August 28, 1955, was brutally murdered for no other reason than the color of his skin.
Many people know the story of Emmett Till and how his murder was a tipping point for the Civil Rights Movement. But what happens when we read the events without historical context? What do we feel when we learn about his stutter, his care for his mother, or how he liked baseball?
Knowing history and knowing the facts is imperative. But bringing humanity into every event, every statistic, and every story is equally important. Today we honor Emmett Till and all those who continue his legacy by fighting for racial justice.
#ClimateAction only happens when we elect people who will stand up to industrial polluters and their disproportionate influence on politicians, especially those who deny the existence of #ClimateChange. The #ClimateCrisis primarily affects communities where #lowincome people and/or #minorities live more. We demand and end to ecological devastation!

Video description and text:
A background video of the Earth rotating, as seen from space, is overlayed by the following text, with slow, peaceful music playing. Only 35% of Americans are concerned about climate change. This is down from 44% in 2014. A majority of people feel climate action must be accomplished by government, corporations, and industries. Less than half of people feel climate action can be accomplished by individuals. Black & Hispanic Americans, women, & Democratic voters are most likely to be concerned about climate change and how their actions affect it. The Inflation Reduction Act encourages green energy and helps low-wealth people lower what they spend on energy. But in order to pass the bill and get the support of Sen. Joe Manchin (D.-W.Va.) concessions were made on carbon emissions and the Mountain Valley Pipeline project in West Virginia. Incremental progress is still progress. But we must keep pushing for more climate action. We can make dramatic climate action happen by voting for candidates that are committed to addressing the climate crisis.
Today, 8/26 commemorates the 1920 certification of the #19thammendment, solidifying the #RightToVote for SOME women. But now, we have fewer rights than we've had in decades! We're joining the @leagueofwomenvoters to call on our lawmakers to:

2️⃣ Add the #EqualRights Amendment to the Constitution

Video transcription: We have lost all three of our children to suicide, and pain, and killing drugs. Our children should have been given a fighting chance—had they gotten the mental health care we all deserve. There should have been crime scene tape around every one of their bodies. There should be crime scene tape around every one of our children's bodies that fall in the streets. Since 1999, suicide is up 71%
for our men, 139% for our women. I am enraged by the injustice of a health
care system that does not care...for our children. To remember them is to love them. Forward together! Not one step back! Forward together! Not one step back!
Yesterday, President Biden's plan to relieve student debt was announced. It is estimated that "90% of relief will go to people earning less than $75,000 and that roughly 20 million borrowers could have their debt completely canceled."
Student debt relief is part of our Resolution to End Poverty in Maryland.
We're asking individuals, organizations, and elected officials/candidates to add their names, calling on the #Maryland General Assembly to enact a Resolution to End Poverty in our state.

1—“Two months without abortion rights” and “DAY 2.” Below,, " In European countries where abortion is easily available, free of cost, and not stigmatized, the actual rate of abortions performed is roughly half that in the US, adjusted for population differences."
2—“A timeline of needless suffering: June 2022” and “A ten year old child underwent a medical abortion in Indiana, after being raped in her home state of Ohio, which had a 'trigger ban' that took effect once the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling was made official.”
3—“A timeline of needless suffering: July 2022” and “A Texas woman requested an abortion after miscarrying one of her twins at 15 weeks but was told her life wasn’t sufficiently endangered in order to receive the procedure. Weeks later, with sepsis and resulting kidney damage, she was allowed an abortion.” Then "August 2022" it says, " A mother in Nebraska who previously assisted her 17 year old daughter obtain abortifacient medicines and induce an abortion, was charged with a felony because of Nebraska’s 20 week abortion ban."
4—“Where are forced-birth advocates focusing next?” under which is “The majority of these groups are now working to erode legal exceptions to abortion bans that allow abortions in cases of rape and incest. Some groups are also building on state laws that allow the genetic father of a fetus (or related family members) to bring legal claims against health professionals that provided abortion care to a pregnant person or that pregnant person themselves.”

1—“Two months without abortion rights” and “DAY 2.” Below, it says "A study published last year in Duke University’s journal Demography estimated that if the Supreme Court invalidated Roe v. Wade, triggering abortion ban laws in 13 states, pregnancy-related deaths would increase for all pregnant individuals by 21% over time."
2—"US Annual Pregnancy-Related Deaths, per 100,000 Births" below it says, "Because of structural inequalities in health care, Black people were projected to experience a 33% increase in maternal mortality in the years after bans were enacted."
3—“Impact on healthcare:", under which it says "As abortion bans carry heavy penalties for even assisting with termination of a pregnancy, health care professionals are erroring on the side of not providing some kinds of medical treatments and/or prescription medications at all.” Below it says “Impact on medical care professionals:”, under which is “Primary care providers and OB-GYNs are refusing to work in states with abortion bans.”
4—“Any person who could become pregnant but also takes prescription medications that are harmful or fatal to a fetus is faced with a new, unwelcome challenge without access to abortion care. This is particularly true for disabled persons, who are more likely to be victims of sexual violence and/or experience an unplanned pregnancy, but also pregnant people who discover they have aggressive or late stage cancers. Because most treatments are not compatible with fetal development and/or viability, states with restrictive abortion bans may force patients to carry to term, delaying care.”
Part 1 of 3—Two months after #Dobbs
In addition to violating the #bioethical imperative of #BodilyAutonomy as a fundamental #HumanRight, #abortion restrictions and bans are an effective distraction technique used to keep poor and low-wealth communities at odds.

Wade and 50 years of abortion rights. Thirteen states had previously passed “trigger bans” – laws that were automatically enacted once the ruling became official.”
2—“The dissent:", under it says “The three liberal justices, in their joint dissent, wrote, ‘As of today, this Court holds, a state can always force a woman to give birth, prohibiting even the earliest abortions.’” Below, “Why is bodily autonomy important?” under which is “The right to abortion care is only one part of this bioethical principle and fundamental human right, defining an individual's personal consent to any and all medical care, treatment, intervention, and study of their body as inviolate and undeniable.”
3—“The origins of the right to bodily autonomy:” under is “The right of bodily autonomy was formalized shortly after World War II’s Nuremberg Trials, during which details regarding the medical experimentation, and consequently torture, done by N@z! doctors on nonconsenting, mostly Jewish, prisoners, came to light.”
4—“Examples of bodily autonomy violations in the US” followed by, “The 40-year Tuskegee Syphilis Study promised treatment to Black men suffering from syphilis, but denied those men access to readily available penicillin regimens.” & "The Supreme Court upholds the legality of forced sterilizations, mostly performed on minority women arbitrarily deemed mentally ill or disabled and women under guardianships."
