The naked lunch. @allisonzuckerman’s 2017 solo show at the @rubellmuseum, “Allison Zuckerman: Stranger in Paradise,” presented a new garden of (un)earthly delights, abound with wonky noses and technicolor picnics. Seen here, "Creation in the Earthly Garden," 2017 showcases Zuckerman’s surrealist, post-postmodern zeal.

“It’s in my DNA to be a rebel, and to fight everything and everybody,” French architect Odile Decq (@decqodile) told Ted Loos (@looslips) for Cultured’s Summer 2017 issue. “I was born that way.” Seen here is a corner of #AnttiLovag’s Maison Bernard, decorated and renovated by Decq in 2016.

Tyler Mitchell (@tylersphotos) contemplates a Black utopia in his photography, which he sees as “an invite into visualizing Black folks at play, enjoying romantic scenes, whether that’s at a picnic or hula hooping.” The photographer sat down with Cultured in late 2020 to discuss his artistic inspiration, first solo exhibition at @jackshainman and more as a member of the 2021 Young Artists List.

Brazilian gallery @mendeswooddm has opened a new space in New York bringing the spirit of São Paulo to Tribeca. Currently on display is @mpatricialeite's "Praia do Poço 2 (Poço Beach 2)," 2022, seen here. The work is part of Leite's solo show "Mantiqueira," on view at the gallery until August 12. "Mantiqueira," meaning "mountains that cry" in the indigenous Tupi language, is a mountain range that creates the border between Leite's home state of Minas Gerais and the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Kudzanai-Violet Hwami (@mwana.wevhu) wants the choice to reveal herself—or not. The London-based, Zimbabwean artist uses the act of painterly obfuscation to expel the idea that figuration must always explore identity. As one of the four recipients of the inaugural Biennale College Arte grant and residency at this year's edition of the Venice Biennale, her installation of paintings, floor-to-ceiling photographs and a sound piece turned heads for its color and form, and the sentiment behind it: fracturing her picture planes and employing visual markers of censorship, the artist takes on what she has called the supposed inescapable nature of identity when you are a minority, especially if you are making figurative painting.

Ballroom Marfa brought the heart of Far West Texas to the Hamptons this past Saturday when Fairfax Dorn (@fairfaxdornprojects) and #VirginiaLebermann, founders of the contemporary art museum, together with executive director and curator #DaisyNam gathered friends of the art world for a "magical festive" (as per the dress code) evening at Lebermann's home in Bridgehampton, New York. The night was comprised of cocktails by @casadragones, alfresco dining by @yannnurynyc and sounds by @heladonegro. Lebermann and Dorn were joined by @rashidjohnson and @shereehovsepian, pictured, @cynthiarowley, @laurenblauren, @hankwillisthomas and more.

On August 18, the City of Los Angeles will reopen the city's one-and-only UNESCO World Heritage site: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House (@hollyhockhouse) after a period of renovation and restoration. The landmark building was the legendary architect's first Los Angeles commission, designed for heiress Aline Barnsdall in 1919. “A harbinger of California modernism, Hollyhock House continues to inspire artists, architects, and the public at large,” says Hollyhock House curator Abbey Chamberlain Brach. Though known as a ski—and après-ski— destination in the winter, Aspen is also beautiful in the summer, lying in a verdant valley after the rain, and Aspen ArtWeek, hosted by the @aspenartmuseum, launches annually in early August as a seasonal celebration. The week is punctuated with an art auction and gala to benefit the museum (#ArtCrush); art talks, performances and tours; an art fair (Intersect Aspen), more cocktails and some very swanky dinners.
This year, Aspen galleries have put on outstanding shows to coincide. Click the link in our bio to read about five local exhibitions not to be missed. Text by Scarlet Cheng.
