Galápagos Species Feature 6) Galápagos Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas agassizii! These beautiful turtles are the most common species in the Galápagos and they are found in shallow lagoons and the waters surrounding the islands. Galápagos green turtles lay 50-80 eggs per clutch in the sand and the sex of the young, like many other turtle species, is determined by incubation temperature. Over 30 degrees Celsius they usually are females, and under 30 degrees Celsius they usually are males. I was very lucky to be able to both swim and kayak with these turtles in multiple areas around the Galápagos. And for a bonus species feature: the brightly colored Panamic Cushion Star, Pentaceraster cumingi, seen at the beginning of the first video! Note: as required by the Galápagos Islands National Parks we stayed 6 feet away from these animals whenever possible.
