Sorry to int-erupt 🌋 Erupting almost constantly since the 1840s, Mount Bagana is one of the youngest and most active volcanoes in the South Pacific. With its symmetrical cone forming 300 to 500 years ago, the volcano has reached 6,000 feet (1,850 meters) above sea level. Recent lava flows captured in this image by Operational Land Imager-2 on Landsat 9 show various stages of the volcanic process. The dark brown areas are fresh lava flows; older lava flows are covered in new vegetation, while lighter brown regions may have been stripped of vegetation due to acidic gasses or volcanic debris. Photos by @babaktafreshi | It’s a remote wonderland deep in the Sahara. The midnight moon was about to set, and the galaxy was rising above magnificent sandstone cliffs in Tassili n’Ajjer National Park, also home to prehistoric rock art (fourth photo). We were far from the last village after three days driving off-road. The mission was to document dark sky places in Algeria as part of The World at Night project and for the Algiers Observatory. It was late in the season, and the midday temperature was near 55°C (130°F). I was happy to spend most of the outdoor time at night when it was cooling off, though that was also an active time for scorpions and viper snakes! I’d love to return to this truly unique part of the world to explore more. @twanight#sahara#earth#tassilinajjer#tassili
