“Hip Hop Cafe was my personal tribute, a homage to the golden age of Hip Hop and classic records I loved. Although it was filmed in East London, stylistically I wanted the feel of that New York cafe. It was a passion project, self-financed existing for no reason other than my love of music and that era. Originally the idea came from wanting to make a film only using famous lines from other films but I thought it would be even more fun and unique to string a film together only using lyrics from golden age rap records. I am pretty good but not an encyclopedia. All of the tracks were ones I have played a lot. We only had 13 hours in total to film it at night in a pizzeria, which isn’t much at all but we made the most of it and a lot of laughter was had. The film premiered at The BFI London Film Festival and became a Vimeo staff pick, had over 194k views, as well as being featured on 50 Cent’s This is 50 and shared by the legendary new Stretch and Bobbito. In December 2021 Shelter and agency Dark Horses came up with the idea of home teams wearing away kits in honour of the twenty five families who become homeless during the duration of a football match. Six months on, and with the housing crisis still no nearer an improvement, we thought today was a good idea to revisit this film. Directed by Pete Banks, the film depicts a series of short, funny, heart-warming vignettes based on the classic traditions of Boxing Day football.
