Take a stroll around Britain’s great coastlines and, if you’re lucky, you might come across a sound mirror — a curved, concrete monolith that looks like something out of Doctor Who, but is, in fact, a relic of a near-100-year-old audio detection experiment.

A new audio-visual installation combining footage of early 20th century Japan with music by Midori Takada has been announced for the @britishfilminstitute this month. Visuals will be presented across six screens, accompanied by contemporary field recordings captured by filmmaker @lightsurgeon , immersive sound design by audiovisual artist Tim Cowie, and a bespoke score composed by percussionist Midori Takada.
