In “Parallel” our main character Lucy is at dinner with her family who talk to each other in Cantonese. Unable to speak the same language, she contemplates how she does, or does not, feel bonded to her family and heritage. To create the somewhat lonely experience of feeling on the outside listening in, we kept framing observational - capturing textures and non-verbal cues that Lucy could focus on during a soundscape of the family talking and eating. Hopefully we show that body-language can be worth a thousand words. As a child what I knew of Chinese cooking was our beloved local (biggup Shangki-Li), mum’s rice cooker and tales of chicken feet when my Dad and Step-mum would visit Hong Kong. Growing up (and largely thanks to @ojtdop who cooks a mean mapo, and tbh the whole Robbins' fam) I learnt more deeply about the nuances, the beauty, and the endless bundles of flavours Chinese culture has to offer. Was so fun to capture some of the many delectable dishes on the @pearldragonrestaurant menu in all their radiant glory. The last still is of Paul the fish who brought back memories of pressing my face against the tank when we’d go collect on Friday nights. Last year I had the pleasure of working on “Parallel”, a short film that contemplates ideas of belonging, non-verbal communication, and family heritage. This project had such a profound effect on me. Being and working in a room surrounded by faces and mannerisms that reflected my Chinese family was something I’d never experienced in my professional life. A feeling that’s hard to put into words but one that I will cherish forever. I'm grateful to have met so many talented asian and dual-heritage collaborators through this film and for it to have unlocked a new sense of identity and community within myself. @auroramusic - A Touch of the Devine   Cannot shout out the camera and lighting team enough 🙌🏽 6 tracks, live vocals, choreo and long continuous takes all in 12 hours - a mad accomplishment. As we were looking 360 @sonnyhorwell lit all 4 sets predominantly from above on a truss that didn’t lower - made for a fun pre-light! After we filmed this campaign together for @grenfell_united, Feruza Afewerki really kindly gifted the whole crew with a copy of her heartfelt photo book “Gold & Ashes”. It’s a stunning collection of photos that captures and humanises the true stories of the local community, the survivors and bereaved. A description about the book from the “Gold & Ashes” website: “This photo book refocuses the lens on the heart of the matter - the memories of those we’ve lost and those directly impacted by the tragedy. In documenting the true stories of the bereaved and survivors, our hope is to highlight the humanity and courage of the Grenfell community.” Reading through these stories, the love for the family members, friends, neighbours and homes that were valued and cherished by the Grenfell community is palpable, and “Gold & Ashes” does a beautiful job of preserving their memories forever. I’m so thrilled that I had the chance to work with @oliviadeano again for her super mesmeric and catchy as hell live performance film ‘Growth’ for @amazonmusic Nwaka envisioned a very fun shot list consisting of 5 continuous scenes - one for each track on the EP, ultimately creating this beautiful and fluid moment in time with Olivia. We had two days to shoot the five tracks and every single department brought their a-game to make it happen.
