King Princess played me a demo of one of the best rock n roll songs I had heard in ages. And I said this is amazing, but you know we have to get one of the best rock n roll drummers in the world to play on it. And she agreed. So I asked my friend Taylor Hawkins. And he loved the song and said yes. Words can’t express the sadness around his tragic passing. But I’m beyond grateful to have known him for the couple years I did. Thank you to Taylor’s family for allowing us to use his magnificent performance. “Special” out today by @lizzobeeating, including our baby “Break Up Twice”. First off I adore this song. Before I went in with Lizzo last year, I nearly cancelled about 50-11 times. The pandemic had been rough on me creatively and the pressure of going with a superstar and having to deliver the goods was too much. Well, I went anyway, and this artist and her unbridled freeness to create and exceptional musicality gave me my groove back. Here’s a song that we made with some of my favourite musicians in the world and an old drum machine named Butchie, owing a debt to William Bell & Ms Lauryn Hill. When @bbcmaestro asked me to teach a course on music production, I said if and only if I could give away every piece of knowledge - both technical and holistic - that I’ve ever learned. From chopping up a drum break to getting the most heartbreaking vocal out of a singer to coming up with a fire-ass bassline, simulating analogue tape sounds in your bedroom. And everything in between. This isn't just a bunch of "when we made Uptown Funk…” stories, this is instantly useable, applicable lessons to either start you off if you're a beginner or give you all the cheat codes if you're already making the bangers. Basically, all the stuff I wish someone had shown me at 20 years old. And most importantly it's how you will take these tools and combine them with your own amazing talent, so you can come back and be teaching me 10 years from now. This was a true labour of love to craft...now take it and go to town. ❤️ Mark
