The Amazon rainforest provides one of the greatest services for the planet, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making it a great ally in the fight against climate change.
However, decades of persistent and large-scale deforestation have converted the forest into a carbon source, as the quantity of gases emitted when trees are cleared is not much higher than the amount they absorb.
Scientists warn that the intense slashing and burning activities to convert the rainforest land for lucrative activities have left enormous quantities of dry leaves, branches, and other organic material in the soil, which make for the perfect fuel for fires in coming months, as the weather in the region turns drier and temperatures rise.
