A former member of the Yardbirds and the Bluesbreakers, Eric Clapton joined up with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker to form the super group Cream in 1966. After four hugely successful albums, Clapton moved on to briefly join Blind Faith - with Baker, Stevie Winwood and Ric Grech - and then re-emerged in 1970 as Derek and The Dominos, who release the global hit ‘Layla’. Since 1974 Clapton has operated as a solo artist with assorted sidemen while also appearing on albums by the likes of George Harrison, Phil Collins, Tina Turner and Sting. During the past six decades the man known as ‘Slowhand’ has released more than 30 chart albums.
The portrait was taken during the ill-fated TV spectacular called Supersession in 1969. In fact it turned out to be the only time I actually photographed Eric in spite of shooting several covers for him.
