Born in Nigeria and raised in Essex, Helen Folasade Adu began singing with Arriva and Pride before setting off on her solo career as Sade. Her debut single ‘Your Love is King’ hit the UK Top 10 in 1984 and, after Top 5 successes in both the UK and the US with the album Diamond Life, Sade went to Number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic in 1985 with the album Promise. Following the release of her Best Of compilation in 1994, Sade remained quiet until 2000, when she returned with her album Lovers Rock, which hit the UK Top 20 and reached Number 3 in America.
The beautiful and stylish Sade was causing quite a stir in the music world by the time a London magazine asked me to take her portrait. I went to a small recording studio she used and set my shot up in a corner. Her earlier experience as a model meant that the session went very smoothly…
