Do you want the good news or the Bad News?
The first album from Bad News came out in 1987 and focused attention on the spoof rock band created in 1983 for the Channel 4 TV series The Comic Strip Presents… which featured as its members the actors Ade Edmondson (vocalist/guitarist Vim Fuego), Nigel Planer (rhythm guitarist Den Dennis), Rik Mayall (bass player Colin Grigson) and Peter Richardson (drummer Spider Webb) in an episode titled ‘Bad News Tour’. The album was produced by Queen guitarist Brian May and included a version of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, which peaked at Number 44 in the UK chart. Bad News played at the Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington as part of a follow-up film More Bad News.
I was asked to shoot the cover for the album and the session was absolutely hysterical. The guys got so involved with their characters that at one point Rick Mayall, who was swigging Jack Daniel’s from the bottle in true Rock and Roll style, would respond only if I called him ‘Colin’!
