According to @catholicnewsagency , when Bl. Jane of Aza was pregnant, she had a dream in which a dog with a torch in his mouth was running setting the world ablaze. Bl. Jane asked a monk at Santo Domingo de Silos what the dream meant, he responded that hee unborn child "would be a great preacher, who would set the world ablaze with the fire of his words" (Fr. Ezra Sullivan).
That unborn child grew up to be St. Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (Ordo Praedicatorum, the Dominicans), who received the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1208 near Toulouse, France.
According to Tekton Ministries, in 1213, St. Dominic and Count Simon de Montfort were going to battle the Albigensians in Toulouse. The Albigensians outnumbered the Catholics 30,000 to 1500. "Confident of their upcoming success, the Albigensians spent the night before the battle celebrating in drunkenness and debauchery. The Catholics, on the other hand, spent their night praying the Rosary; their celebration was focused on that of the Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Finally, St. Dominic went to the Church of Saint-Jacques in Muret to pray the Rosary for victory, while the Count went into battle. The Catholics were able to rush upon the hung-over Albigensians, routing the enemy army and declaring a victory for Christ and Our Lady. After the battle, every Catholic in the area attributed the victory to the Rosary."
According to Fr. Thomas Petri, dean of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington DC, "[T]he word 'Dominican' is a play on the Latin, Domini canes, which means 'dogs of the Lord.'"
This is my original digital drawing of St. Dominic with the dog in Blessed Jane's dream. It was in part inspired by the Hillbilly Thomists' song "I'm a Dog" (whose meaning I did not fully appreciate until finding out the story of St. Dominic).
I used various Dominican references, including paintings of St. Dominic and a photo from @dominicanfriars#dominican#friar#priest#priesthood#vocation#catholic#catholicchurch#traditional#traditionalcatholic#traditionalcatholicism#procreate#catholicart#digitalart#digitalartist#thomism#philosophy#theology#rosary
"Give me a deeper repentance,
a horror of sin,
a dread of its approach;
Help me chastely to flee it,
and jealously to resolve that my heart
shall be Thine alone.
Give me a deeper trust,
that I may lose myself to find myself in Thee,
the ground of my rest,
the spring of my being.
Give me a deeper knowledge of Thyself
as Savior, Master, Lord and King.
Give me deeper power in private prayer,
more sweetnes in Thy Word,
more steadfast grip on its truth.
Give me deeper holiness in speech, thought, action,
and let me not seek moral virtue apart from Thee."
🌺1 Peter 3:4
but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.
🌺Proverbs 31:26
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
🌺Galatians 5:16
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
