. From my long-term work on El Salvador. The images were made across the country, and document MS-13 and La 18 gang members, police and paramilitary officials, prisons, murder sites, funerals, and the government’s war against the gangs. These images document the control that gangs have over society, the violence through which they operate, and the grief that the violence causes. El Salvador is a country where MS-13 street gang, along with its rival Barrio 18 (also called La 18), exercise extensive control over communities and the state is unable to stamp either of them out. The country’s murder rate has consistently been among the world’s highest. The government has brought murder rates down from their high of 17 a day in 2015 to 2 murders a day by March 2020. However an explosion of violence in early 2020, when gangs killed over 76 people in just 4 days, illustrates how volatile the country still is. For now, at least, fear, violence and intimidation remain an everyday part of life here. To see more of my work on El Salvador please copy/paste these link in your browser Guardian - https://bit.ly/3vCCDAe BBC - https://bbc.in/3c5fzm6 Foreign Policy - https://bit.ly/3p7mGiQ My new book titled "Sin Salida" (No Way Out) is now out. The photo book documents the impacts of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha gang (MS-13) and its rival Barrio 18 gang members on El Salvador. You can order the book directly from the publisher (
