🐕🦺 On Saturday we hosted our annual BBQ to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all of our puppy walkers, fosterers and volunteers that dedicate their time to develop our incredible police dogs.
🚔 Other teams from around the force popped in to say thanks and we demonstrated some of the great work of our dogs and their handlers.
🐾 We really couldn’t do it without the help from all our puppy volunteers!
💙 We hope you all had a great day and thanks again for all you do.

🥰 A caring cop helped a retired bobby to relive his past and provide a boost in his battle against poor health.
👮 PC Dean Wainwright became aware of a former traffic officer who is in the same care home as his father and suffering with dementia.
☺️ Thoughtful Dean wanted to try and raise Geoff Brown's spirits and rekindle happy memories of his time in policing.
🔷 So alongside staff at The Knowles care home, Coventry, he set about helping to arrange a special 'blue light breakfast' event.
🚓 This included organising a visit from former colleagues, a chance to ride in an old-style police car again and see one of the current motorbikes used by our traffic cops.
🗣 Dean - who is now part of our drone team - helped to make it happen on a recent day off. He said: "It was great to see Geoff enjoying himself and being able to recall his time in policing.
"The police family never forgets one of its own and Geoff spent many years as part of our traffic team in the 70s and 80s.
"The care home came up with the idea of a 'blue light breakfast' and I tried to create a traffic police theme as much as possible.
"I managed to track down some of his former colleagues, who kindly came along, and was able to source a vintage car. It was only a few weeks beforehand I found out Geoff's son had also been a traffic officer and I'd worked alongside him for a while.
"We also had some of the current Coventry neighbourhood team pop in, and all the other care home residents seemed to enjoy the occasion. Just seeing Geoff smiling made it all worthwhile." 😍

Happy International Dog Day! 🐾
❤️😊🐕 We’re so grateful for all our #policedogs who help keep everyone safe.
Here at West Midlands Police we are privileged to work alongside some absolutely wonderful dogs who assist us in our work every day.
One of our ‘pawsome’ police dogs has retired after a successful career detaining suspects, finding stolen cars and rescuing vulnerable people.
PD Captain is putting up his paws for some well-earned rest after four years fighting crime across the #WestMidlands
🐶 The six-year-old German Shepherd was a graduate from our dedicated dog training unit at Balsall Common. And became an official member of the police team in 2018.
🏅 In 2020 Captain and PC Cottrell were awarded a Certificate of Achievement from the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) after being nominated in the Police Dog Action of the Year Awards.
He has detained dozens of suspects and protected police colleagues including his handler PC Marcus Cottrell when faced with danger.
One job saw Captain and PC Cottrell called to disorder in Solihull where officers had been assaulted. Captain was also kicked, but this didn’t stop him detaining two people.
Captain will now spend his retirement with PC Cottrell and his family after the pair developed such a strong bond working with each other.
💙 Our hero leaves a legacy behind to build on his success. Captain is father to a litter of four-week-old future crime fighters.
PC Cottrell from the Dog Unit, said: “It has been an honour to work alongside Captain and I’m so happy to have him as part of my family who will adore him for the rest of his life.
“Police dogs are integral to the work we do in protecting the public and fighting crime. We couldn’t do this job without our four-legged heroes.”

We’re aware that a large number of bikers from across the UK are planning to attend Longford in Coventry tomorrow (Sunday 21 August).
It’s following the sad news of Luke Cleary, a motorcyclist who died earlier this week. We know many are wishing to pay their respects to Luke, however we’d ask you to think carefully before attending and thank you for understanding our warning as we do not want to see anyone else injured or worse on our roads.
Ride-outs put lives at risk. Riders risk serious injury to themselves and other members of the public and are also a nuisance to residents.
While we fully understand the strength of feeling around Luke’s untimely and tragic death, there is no justification for this type of behaviour.
Our traffic officers will be out and about in force tomorrow on the lookout for offenders and responding to calls from members of the public.
We will using be powers to prosecute offenders and seize vehicles if necessary. We will also be reviewing CCTV to take retrospective action.
Anyone wanting to report anti-social behaviour on our roads can contact us via Live Chat at west-midlands.police.uk between 8am and midnight, call 101 anytime or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

#b2022 | Meet Muhammed. He came to the Smithfield’s venue in #birmingham every evening during the #commonwealthgames to show his support. As soon as his dad came home from work at 8.30pm, they would come down to Smithfield’s and say hello to PC Gyrba & the team. 🤩
On Sunday Muhammed visited the team one last time and handed them a thank you card and chocolates. We really appreciate your support & kindness Muhammed! Thank you 💙 👮♀️

🤩 Four years ago, when we won the prize of the Commonwealth Games, could anyone have believed what this would actually mean for Birmingham and the West Midlands?
🐂 The last few weeks have seen an explosion of colour and culture in the opening ceremony. A mechanical bull that has captured our hearts. Days of sport in spectacular venues, with athletes from across the world and over a million spectators and visitors to this region. Whilst the process of packing up at the conclusion of these events is underway, I think it is worth recognising what remains in our city and for us all to take a moment of reflection to look back on what has been achieved.
💙 Birmingham and the region have changed forever. A city has been reborn in the eyes of the people of Britain and the world, but most importantly those who live and work here. The civic pride that we have all felt that this has happened in our place, will endure. The way visitors have talked about this friendly place; the beautiful squares and the spectacular shops, restaurants and the youth and diversity. It has finally been our moment in Birmingham and the West Midlands to shine and shine we have! We are no second city.
🙌 There will of course be a different feeling in the next few weeks as we find it hard to settle back into normality. We are a region with our challenges and we need to deal with them, but we will never actually go back, because we know we have delivered this incredible moment. Investment and new opportunities lie ahead for the region, because of the new brand we have created.
😆 I hope this is the start of an amazing period for this region. Where we build upon this. As the Games brand said “Sport is just the beginning”.
🌟 Whatever the future holds, for now we have the satisfaction of knowing that when the big moment came, West Midlands Police, with a little help from our friends in policing, aced it!
Thank you.
Sir David Thompson, West Midlands Police Chief Constable

#B2022police | The Commonwealth Games are closing tonight! 🙁 If you're out celebrating the success of #B2022, be sure you look out for each other and keep each other safe. Always use a licensed taxi and try to stay with your group of friends.
If you need a helping hand, just speak to one of our officers who are happy to help 😄
