🏛 PILLARS OF CREATION 🏛 The aptly named Pillars of Creation, featured in this stunning image, are part of an active star-forming region within the nebula and hide newborn stars in their wispy columns. M16 is approx 6,500–7,000 light years away from Earth. 🚀🌍 The pillars are really, REALLY BIG. The pillar on the left is a little over four light-years long, or 40 trillion kilometers! The entire complex is five light-years wide. Our solar system is smaller even than one of the teeny-tiny finger-like protrusions at the tops of the pillars. 😯 The Pillars of Creation probably don’t exist anymore. What you’re actually seeing is 7,000 years old. ✨ THE VEIL NEBULA ✨ Also known by astronomers as Caldwell 33, the Eastern Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan). It is located approximately 7,200 light-years away from Earth. 🚀🌎 . The nebula is known for its unique shape, resembling the appearance of a medieval sorcerer. 🧙‍♀️ . While the nebula will dissipate within a few million years, some of the stars formed within it will likely outlive our Sun. There are around 1 trillion stars in the galaxy, compared with the Milky Way which has around 200-400 billion. ✨ . It is the largest galaxy of what is called the Local Group - a collection of more than 54 galaxies including the Milky Way, the Triangulum galaxy and many smaller dwarf galaxies. 🌌 . In approximately 4.5 billion years the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way (two spiral galaxies) are expected to collide and the result will be a GIANT elliptical galaxy. 🐴 HORSEHEAD NEBULA 🐴 Also known as Barnard-33, the Horsehead Nebula is an iconic celestial object around 1,500 light years away from Earth and is located in the constellation of Orion. 🚀🌎 . It is categorized as a “dark nebula” composed mainly of hydrogen gas and high levels of dust blocking out background light. 😯 . Thanks to the bright emission of its cosmic neighbour nebula IC 434, the dark horsehead is visible to us from Earth. 🔭 . 🌊 LAGOON NEBULA 🌊 . Also known by astronomers as NGC 6523, the Lagoon Nebula is giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. It is located 4,100 light years from Earth. 🚀🌎 . The Lagoon Nebula is so named because of the dark band that separates it in two. The darkness looks like a lagoon surrounded by an island of light. 🏝 . The darker spots in the Lagoon Nebula, including the band that looks like a lagoon, are the densest areas of gas where stars are made.
