To see out #mentalhealthawarenessweek I want to share a little portrait series I’ve been working on - the concept is to break down some of the toxic masculinity that I still see around me. So here’s 5 men showing some vulnerability (myself included). To hopefully make it just a little more normal for men to cry. I can’t bare to think how many men have bottled up their thoughts and emotions and not spoken out, because they feel like it’s not a very “manly” thing to do. I dread to think how many men have lost lives due to that stigma and association. I hope my images help break that barrier down somewhat. If you’re reading this and struggle to open up to your mates, I hope this series shows enough vulnerability to maybe change your mindset towards that. I remember the first time I broke down crying because my mental health had taken a turn for the worst. I was second year at uni, in the kitchen making food while the lads were stood there chatting away. My mate asked me if I was okay and I broke down crying in his arms. My OCD and intrusive thoughts had got the better of me, a disorder I didn’t know I had at the time, and something I want to start to chat about more, after 5 years of it affecting my life in various ways. Anyway, hope this little series helps someone out there talk 💙📸. (Also big love to the 4 top blokes that said yes to getting involved with my idea, forever grateful).
Recently had the pleasure of capturing Nesrine Dally express herself through the sport she loves. A sport that allows her to show up for herself everyday, gave her a community, caused her to meet her husband and give back to other women to help them learn martial arts.
Had so much fun shooting the build up for her next fight this summer. Shot this selection of photos on 120mm film outside the gym. Of course got some action shots for you on the way soon.
