Art, a respite for me from the world was enhanced at The Powers Art Center in Carbondale, Colorado. A free museum which houses a large permanent collection of Jasper Johns’ s work. See photo: High School days, from lead relief, 1969, embossing with object one relief, sheet lead, and mirror. Pictured here as well is an intaglio printed on revere standard white felt paper called Shrink Dink made in 2011. I learned so much visiting the collection about not only Johns as an artist, but about being an artist. The Museum is in a local which calls for thoughtful reflection. They also had an exhibition of Warhol on the first floor. They will take a Polaroid of you, and then you can color it and be added to the wall. See if you can find me there. A nice surprise was seeing a film of my friend @christophermakos being interviewed way back when.
Happiness is when you run into friends and find out it’s a birthday! #happybirthday@debbiebeckmannkotzubei …Lucky you to just be hangin out today with your partner in illuminated crime! #love
Another passing date Aug 10th to honor of one of the greats who through their music and performances inspired young people to pursue their dreams…Isaac Hayes…may the notes of your life continue to make us Dan e, sing, smile and love …#rip@_isaachayes#isaachayes#music. #photo made by me in #2008 the year of his passing
#British-born #Australian#singer, #songwriter, #actress, #entrepreneur, #mother and activist for environmental and animal rights, Olivia Newton-John has passed on. This #four-time Grammy Award winner who was one of the best-selling music artists from the second half of the 20th century to the present was also one of the nicest, humblest people in show business that I ever met. This warrior against the breast cancer that finally took her life will live on in the hearts of so many not just for her musical talents but for her love of our planet and all it’s habitants. #rip#olivianewtonjohn@therealonj#photo made by me in 1979.
#rachmaninoff, depressed and unable to compose, saw a psychiatrist who used hypnosis telling him he could and would write a great concerto…he did. Piano Concerto No. 2. Here’s a bit of it performed by #Russian 21 year old Alexander Malofeev who has made public his opposition to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine even though it can adversely affect his family in Russia. He said: “Every Russian will feel guilty for decades because of the terrible and bloody decision that none of us could influence and predict.” I’m thrilled to see #thefuture of #classicalmusic and let us not cast him out for being born in Russia. @alexandermalofeev is part of the future of #classicalmusic#music#prayforukraine#ukraine
Lunch on the Mountain top with good friends and then going to hear my nyc friend, #christianmcbride …8 time Grammy winner but even more importantly, a great teacher of jazz to a new generation of players. - here as the Jas Academy Artistic Director - he teaches all these players who are on a scholarship and at the end ( which was tonight) conducts a concert with them all through a number of his original compositions…this was the #Aspen premiere of a piece he wrote for his departed friend and mentor Roy Hargrove..
yep today - the “hills are alive with the sound of music”
#music#jazz#royhargrove#katieoberholzer singer from small town in Maine gets #opportunity for growth thru this program which has supported many artists in becoming successful …..one was @jonbatiste
thrilling to experience youthful energy in classical music …#maximlando ..unlikely any of these dedicated #musicians will achieve the fame or $ of a life in rock and roll..but they will have the success of keeping alive an art form of great beauty and intelligence. #classicalmusic#pianist#piano@maximlando
its just a few days since we’ve been in #aspen and in that time I’ve seen old friends, heard established #artists, #painters, like #mayshamohamedi , and #garysimmons talk about their work, gone to about 20 galleries both at art fair @intersectaspen
and those in the town — on top of that I’ve heard concerts from some of the leading classical musicians of our day - pianist #paullewis, a recital by #maximLando - also on piano….tenor opera singer #lawrencebrownlee— best yet I have made some new friends — listening to others, feeding my spirit with nature and with a very high level of committed artists and those who support them, —I wanted to post this pic collection now because so much happens everyday. This social network makes me feel that I can keep in touch with people and share - even if just a #socialplatform, it helps to feels connected — I never understand why some people chose to follow me and then immediately unfollow - if you are following because you love some
rock star pic I have made great - but there is so much more - sorry I disappoint you that my site is not all about photos of celebrities. if you are following because of my painting - I'm so flattered - if you are following me because there are kernels once in awhile of some shared truth of existence - that’s the best — we do not have to ever feel totally alone...so here’s some pics from my past few days ..the first is the Aspen Art Museum wrapped by Gaetano Pesce…the last photo is art created with 500,000 pricks of a pin by Fu Xiaotong…”The full heart always has room for more” …..#aspenclassicalmusic#music#art#painting#learning#living (sid @andersonranchartscenter workshop)
Today was the final day of art fair #intersectaspen ..I had to return to make a final viewing visit of the plaster sculpture of #picasso ‘s left hand and to make a public plea for the funds to buy it ! Which got a good laugh out of @mathias.rastorfer and his team @gmurzynska
The hand is a symbol of the creative force. This is a plaster sculpture of Picasso’s left-hand palm which I was able to view in person today at #aspen art fair. The hand was part of a series produced in 1937, the same year as Guernica… I learned, from the very generous galley co-owner @mathias.rastorfer, that Picasso did not chose to cast in Bronze as that fabrication would not have been by his own hand and the process would have removed all the details. He wanted all to see the lines of his palm, lines that can reveal not only one’s fate, but one’s character. Hands are a recurring motif in #Picasso’s work as he strongly felt the hand of the artist is the core of creation. So much to say about this moving piece art. There is a limited edition book La Main de Picasso that I was fortunate to have been given by @galeriegmurzynska - I learned so much today @intersectaspen - If you want to deepen your appreciation of life much less the life of some of history’s greatest artists, I recommend visiting this gallery in #Zurich or # NYC. The gallery in Zurich was designed by one of the greatest women architects in history - Zaha Mohammad Hadid. #beinspired
Rain poured down on these amazing artists of Sway Productions and dancers from @aspensantafeballet ..the 20 minute show happens 3 times a day for 4 days…free to all…I love how magical art can make our world especially for young minds who have the potential of a life filled with creativity…#aspen#aspensantafeballet#free#dance#bloom
This photograph was made in the house where the B52s lived together. The room was the “sewing” room, a place where Robert Molnar, who lived with them, made his creations. It’s on this shoot I believe I first met @robertmolnarnyc. He designed clothes and helped, as their friend, to ‘style’ the band. I don’t think I’d ever worked with a stylist before..I always did it myself. There were no budgets for that kind of support and often musicians did not think they would be considered “authentic” if someone was bringing in clothes for a shoot or “dressing” them. Times have changed. Making photographs with artists who were the same age as me could create long term friendships. It did with Robert and with the B52’s..especially with Kate. This image will be in my book of photos about music of the 80’s decade that comes out the end of September..They’re about to do their last tour …it’s hard to believe time has flown by as it has and like them I often feel it’s time to put to end one part of what we do to open doors, space, and time for new exploration. #1980s#b52s#music#newwave#rocknroll#photography#newyork
I once read somewhere ( wish I could remember who said) that "Under the sun, no moment is more important than any other.”
I can say that when I catch someone looking at one of my paintings, especially if it is a child, that whoever said that is
totally wrong. #art#painting#beliefs#joy#wonder#pride
