🇺🇸 The House panel investigating the #Jan6insurrection at the US Capitol laid the blame firmly on Donald #Trump Thursday night, saying the assault was hardly spontaneous but an “attempted coup” and a direct result of his effort to overturn the 2020 election.
Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and chair of the panel, laid out the committee’s initial findings that Trump led a “sprawling, multi-step conspiracy aimed at overturning the presidential election”.
The panel’s vice chair, Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, called it a “sophisticated seven-part plan.
The panel played a quip from former Attorney General Bill Barr who testified that he told Trump the claims of a rigged election were false.
In another, the former president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, testified to the committee that she respected Barr’s view that there was no election fraud, admitting, “I accepted what he said.”
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy called the panel a “scam” and labelled the investigation a political “smokescreen” for Democrats’ priorities.

🇺🇸“I thought he would come back so I covered myself with blood,” said an 11-year-old girl who survived the #massshooting at an elementary school in #Uvalde, Texas to Congress on Wednesday.
It was the second day lawmakers heard wrenching testimony on the nation’s #gunviolence.
The House passed a wide-ranging gun control bill Wednesday in response to recent mass shootings, that would raise the age limit for purchasing a semi-automatic rifle and prohibit the sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 15 rounds. The bill is yet to pass in the Senate which is unlikely.

The head of Paris police has admitted that the #StadeDeFranceChaos at the #ChampionsLeague final last month was a product of failed security operations.
Didier Lallement also apologised for tear-gassing supporters as they tried to enter the stadium.
The May 28 final was marred by scenes of mayhem as Liverpool fans struggled to enter the stadium for the match against Real Madrid, raising questions over the capacity of the French capital to host the 2024 Olympics.
He encouraged supporters from Liverpool and Real Madrid to file complaints if they were victims of counterfeited tickets or street crime outside the stadium "so that we can find the guilty parties and prosecute them."

️🧑⚖️🖼️ A trial started on Wednesday in Paris with eight men accused of stealing a #Banksy artwork, painted on the door of the #Bataclan concert venue to honour 90 people killed in the #2015terrorattacks.
The seven French defendants and one Italian are suspected of removing the metal door from the building before dawn in 2019 and transporting it to Italy.
It was decorated in 2018 with the stencil of a mournful young woman by the anonymous British street artist, giving it an estimated value of up to one million euros.
Many concertgoers fled via the same alley when the Bataclan became the focal point of France's worst-ever attacks since World War II that killed 130 people.
The trial over the attacks heard the beginning of closing arguments Wednesday by the three leading prosecutors in the case. Closing arguments by the defence lawyers start next week, and the verdicts are scheduled for June 29.

🇷🇺🇹🇷#Russian Foreign Minister Sergei #Lavrov is in #Turkey for a two-day visit for talks on unblocking #grain exports from #Ukraine🇺🇦, which have been stalled by Moscow's offensive amid a UN warning of a worldwide food crisis due to the war.
In a joint press conference on Wednesday, Lavrov said the onus of restoring grain shipments in the Black Sea was on Ukraine and that Moscow needed to take no action since it had already made the necessary commitments and was "ready to guarantee the safe passage of vessels leaving Ukrainian ports and heading for [Turkish] waters."
Lavrov's Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu said that a UN plan to ease the global food crisis by restarting Ukrainian grain exports along a sea corridor was "reasonable", and requires more talks between Russia and Ukraine.
