“No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.” - Marsha P Johnson
Around 2,000 LGBTQIA+ people claim asylum in the UK each year, after overcoming unimaginable challenges and risks of persecution in their home countries, as well as danger on their journeys to the UK. However, only 1 in 4 people who apply for asylum on the basis of their sexuality are granted refugee status.
With the UK’s current ‘hostile environment’ towards refugees and asylum seekers, and with the Nationality and Borders Bill looming, it’s becoming even harder for LGBTQIA+ refugees to claim asylum and live in the UK.
LGBTQIA+ people pursuing asylum are required to disclose their sexuality and/or gender identity immediately on arrival—and are also required to provide evidence at the beginning of this process—a factor which many LGBTQIA+ people may be uncomfortable with.
Many people fleeing persecution are unaware that they can be given protection on account of their sexuality and/or gender identity; they may also feel shame and fear about talking about this, and so often apply for asylum long after arriving in the country, which makes their claims less credible in the eyes of the UK Government.
You can’t choose where you are born. You can’t choose who you love. You can’t choose the body that you’re born in to. Everyone should be able to live and love in safety.
This Pride, support LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers with essential items and services through purchasing our LGBTQIA+ Support item. Store link in bio.

This is what your support helps to achieve. Our long-time partner, @basmehzeitooneh, recently sent us this video featuring their Chief Communications Officer and Co-Founder, Yasmin Kayali speaking to some of the incredible work they do on a daily basis.
Basmeh & Zeitooneh is a grassroots and refugee-led organisation that has established 6 centres across Lebanon, helping almost 286,309 individuals through their programs since 2015. They run a wide range of support programs; including supplying emergency humanitarian aid in the aftermath of the Beirut bomb blast in 2020, supporting livelihood projects with women, and working to educate children living in refugee camps.
It’s because of your support that we’re able to support organisations such as Basmeh & Zeitooneh. Thank you. To allow us to continue funding these essential organisations, please donate via the link in our bio, or by visiting chooselove.org

Calling all artists!📣
To date, more than 80 million people have been forcibly displaced due to conflict, climate change, and fear of persecution. This year we are creating an art challenge with @ChooseLove, which provides support to refugees globally, to raise awareness of the challenges refugees and asylum seekers face and raise much-needed funds.
We believe in the power of art and its ability to change the world! Starting with the World Refugee Day (June 20th), we are asking artists, to use the prompts below to create artworks, share them on social media with the hashtags #chooseloveandart and #chooselove and encourage their followers to share and donate.
If you are not an artist, you can share our work with the hashtags and help us reach a wider audience and raise more funds.
Join us to use your creativity for a great cause!🌈

Last night, the UK Government attempted to deport asylum seekers based in the UK to Rwanda. These people had already faced unimaginable, horrific circumstances, and threats to their life and safety to get here - only to be turned away.
Thankfully, this horrific plan was halted at the last minute - just before the plane was scheduled to take off on a Ministry of Defence runway - after a legal injunction from the European Court of Human Rights.
We are grateful to every lawyer, activist, individual, charity and organisation that helped to halt these flights.
Priti Patel has said that she is disappointed at the failure of these deportations.
We must all keep fighting to ensure the UK Government rethinks this horrific policy.
We will all know someone who will disagree with us on this, the Rwanda Policy and Britain's immigration laws in general. It is vital that we don’t ignore questions, and that we are open to conversations around these topics. Education and empathy is key.
We’ve created this carousel to support you when having conversations on this issue. Please like and share.

What do Pride and Freedom mean to you?
Right now, for LGBTQIA+ refugees and people seeking asylum, their freedom and right to seek safety in the UK is being challenged by the Nationality and Borders Bill and Rwanda processing scheme. In the face of these adversities, members of our partner organisation - @africanrainbowfamily - have shared these videos on what Pride and Freedom mean to them. Here are some of their answers…
❤️"Freedom is to live your life with your true identity without fear"
🧡“Celebrating pride means promoting self-affirmation, dignity and equal rights for all. We are all in this together and I think we forget that sometimes’
💛“Pride is my identity”
💚“Freedom is when we are able to live our truth and liberate ourselves for who we are"
💙“To me, freedom means love, diversity, tolerance and inclusivity"
Thank you, African Rainbow Family, for these beautiful videos.
