Day 88: 5,513 miles (8820 km)
This week I got to ride some spicy gravel, meet some dope people and explore some awesome cities.
Zacatecas was probably my favorite Mexican city so far- cobbled streets and European architecture with donkeys carrying mezcal roaming the city. I spent two nights there discovering the city with my host (and personal tour guide) @paquillollamas . Thanks bro!
I left the city on beautiful backroads and ended up in San Jose de Gracia a beautiful pueblo on a large lake before continuing on to Aguascalientes the next day where I enjoyed an amazing pool day with family friends. The next day I powered to Leon, a large industrial city with decent bike lane infrastructure. Yesterday morning leaving on the bike paths I saw bikes of all shapes and sizes carrying all different kind of loads. Biking is universal and can connect you with people all over the world - even if it’s just a nod of respect or friendly wave and smile - I love interacting with other cyclists!
After a chill morning on gravel, I started climbing to the Cristina Rey, a massive Jesus statue with a 360 view of the area. Eventually the climb became too steep for me to climb on loose gravel and I hiked the remaining 2.5 miles to the summit (where it was super crowded since it was Sunday). At the summit, people formed a line to take pictures with me and asking about my journey- they were amazed that I made it to the top with my bike! These little interactions fire me up and give me more motivation when I get back on the bike.
After descending, I made it to the city of Guanajuato where I spent the night. It’s another amazing city with beautiful colors and sounds. As I write this I am deciding whether to spend another night to explore or continue my journey south. This week I will make it to Mexico City where I look forward to taking a week off to explore!! Let’s ride!!!!!!
PS: Huge thank you to @tailfincycling that saw that I had lost my left pannier and sent me a replacement bag. I am excited to have a symmetric setup again and to lose the 2L coke bottle I had been carrying the past 3 weeks (but had never even used lol).
