3 steps to lean into resistance as your teacher.
Resistance surfaces to tell you something in the moment.
You might feel a physical sensation like tightness, constriction, heavy, breathless, congestion/ringing in ears, hot, sweaty, heart beating fast…
Or thoughts might pop into your head like I experienced the other day when I was asked to sing out loud in a group setting 😰😱.
This surprised me, to say the least, and then I felt the resistance rise up.
Immediately it squeezed me tight in the throat, my stomach clenched, and I thought “This is stupid. No effin’ way I’m doing that. What is wrong with her? Why would she ask us to do this?!?”.
When I slowed everything down with a few deep breaths, I knew that my body knew that I had an unmet need and was signalling me to take notice.
I didn’t feel safe to be heard.
I’m often asked “Yes, but how” do you lean into resistance and shift into practicing self compassion?
I invite you to try these 3 steps:
1️⃣ Create awareness
What are you specifically feeling in this moment?
Maybe you don’t feel safe.
Maybe you don’t feel comfortable.
Maybe you feel lost.
Maybe you feel alone.
2️⃣ Ask it what it wants?
It might feel like going slower.
It might feel like understanding more.
It might feel like better connection.
It might feel like less loud.
It might feel like not so stimulating.
It might feel like letting someone else go first.
3️⃣ Integrate action
If it feels available, move yourself towards meeting your needs in the moment.
Know that you get to choose when to move yourself away from any situation that doesn’t feel physically or emotionally safe, at any time.
Be patient and kind with yourself as you build this practice.
PS - singing out loud felt super liberating and I’m so glad I leaned into my resistance and moved through to experience it fully.
What does resistance feel like in your body?
