The Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, 1238-1310, Padua - Part 1, the Nave. The “Basilica del Santo”, built in the shape of a Latin cross, is 115 m long and divided into three naves, with a wide but short transept. The crossing is 55 m wide and the maximum height of the interior is 38.5 m. The aisles continue into the ambulatory that wraps around the presbytery and choir (1st pic). The church, immersed in semi-darkness, shows a fusion of the mighty Romanesque with the soaring Gothic (2nd pic). The nave is covered by hemispherical domes reminiscent of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice (3rd pic). On the counter façade (4th pic) stands a large fresco by Pietro Annigoni (1985) depicting St Anthony on a walnut tree in the act of preaching and, above it, an eight-petalled rose window (5th pic). The nave area covers a very large space, bordered by a series of pillars on the right and left, which are covered with numerous tomb monuments dating mainly from the 15th-17th centuries. These represent a cross-section of the civil and cultural life of Padua and the Republic of Venice in those centuries. On the first pillar on the left, pilgrims are greeted by the altar of the Madonna of the Pillar, by Stefano da Ferrara (1350, 6th pic), while on the next one, the processional votive statue of St Anthony (7th pic) has been permanently present since 2020. On the first pillar on the right is the stoup of John the Baptist by Giovanni Minello (1493-94, 8th pic). There are about sixty images of the Virgin Mary in the Basilica, including the one on the third right pillar, attributed to Guariento di Arpo (14th century, 9th pic) and the one on the fourth pillar behind the pulpit (10th pic) (Padova, 2021-2022)
