The 'penny sit-up', one of the first homeless shelters to be created in Blackfriars, London. Operated by the Salvation Army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was established in response to high rates of homelessness. The individuals could pay a penny to sit in the warm room all night, but lying down was not permitted.
The 'two-penny hangover' was an additional option; it was similar to the 'penny sit-up', except there was a rope in front of the bench to literally 'hang over'. The pieces of rope were cut early in the morning so that the shelter's clients would wake up and leave the premises. Other shelters in London offered the 'four penny coffin', in which clients were given a coffin-sized box in which to sleep lying down; for four pennies, a client could stay at a coffin house and be provided with shelter, food, and the opportunity to sleep lying flat on their back.
