Single

Post 493: John Grant (2015)
"My first encounter with John Grant was with his second studio album, Pale Green Ghosts (2013). Having been ignorant of his first release, Queen Of Denmark (2010) or any of his previous work with the band The Czars (1994-2004) it didn’t take long for that to be corrected. An unexpected journey down the John Grant rabbit hole began. He is not shy about opening up about his life and his struggles. There are many articles and lengthy interviews on what his music and particular tracks signify so I don’t need to spend time on that here – there are some links at the bottom of this post if you want to discover more. But it is important to note that these troubles are a constant source of inspiration for his songs. Whether it be homophobia, misogyny or broken relationships, there are common themes, often returned to. It’s clearly a cathartic experience for him; a flip side to his early life when he was forced to run and hide from who and what he was. But let’s be clear it’s not just vitriol, there is humour, lots of humour, and also plenty of love; it’s just usually coated in something darker." (READ ON at our website)

Mitski - “Laurel Hell”
The Japanese-American singer-songwriter releases her 6th album. With every release, Mitski Miyawaki’s (simply known as Mitski) fan base grew. The theatrical art pop of her earlier work and the later indie rock approach came together on the musician’s biggest album yet: "Be The Cowboy". With "Laurel Hell", Mitski dives into the world of 80’s-inspired synth pop. It results in a very keyboard-driven album. Tracks like "The Only Heartbreaker" and "Love Me More" contain that bright and choppy 80’s sound. The lyrics, on the other hand, have a darker theme on this record. Mitski addresses her artistic struggles, isolation and a failed relationship. It’s all brought in quite compelling metaphors. However, the album just doesn’t match the quality of previous records. Despite the 3 strong tracks that "Laurel Hell" starts off with, other songs feel a bit underwhelming. It lacks the memorable hooks and distinctive melodies we normally get from a Mitski project. Especially, the slow-paced "Everyone" and earlier mentioned “Love Me More" are kinda uninspired. Still, this isn’t a particularly bad album. There’s always enough sincerity in Mitski’s songwriting to makes her work worth a listen.
