Mate bedside table by @joaoteixeira_designstudio
"How often do you go to bed and spend some time on your tablet or laptop? How easy is the transition between the moment you need the devices and the moment you need to put them aside? How neat has been your cable management on your bed side table?
This were some questions that immediately led to the design of “Mate” – a minimal and sophisticated bed side table.
The key feature lies on the table top, which is removable and slidable allowing it to be used as a laptop stand.
Imagine the scenario: You’re at the living room and ready to go to bed, you take all the stuff (mobile, headphones, laptop, books and others) and use the wooden stand which magically slides and attaches to “Mate”. Then you just slide the table top bring your cables up, slide it again, and you’re good to go.
The design language is reminiscent of the “Elephant” stool by Vitra, but also has some inspiration from the “Butterfly” stool designed by Sori Yanagi. I mean, how many of you use stools to replace the job of a common bed side table? And this is why the design language took this approach.
The metal tube adds extra stability but also adds extra storage, the mix between fabric, metal and plywood is a formula that has been working out really nice for the studio. There are to holes in the cable management area (on the left and right) so you can pass the outlet cables, the fabric stand also has a design that allows the cable to go through the corners.
The goal was to keep the multifunctionality balanced and not taking this too far, so the result is a simple and practical product which offers some usability you don’t see (surprisingly) very often."
