Dunvegan Castle // Skye
.
.
Said to be the oldest occupied castle in Scotland, Dunvegan is the seat of the Clan MacLeod.
It has been occupied by clan chiefs over 7 centuries and 30 generations!
It was first opened to the public in the early 1930s and is one of the top attractions on the Isle of Skye.
It is also the centre of folklore and myth with the infamous Faery flag that is on display said to call the faeries in to aid the clan in battle.
Another tale is of the clan chief being at a state dinner in Edinburgh when he was provoked to boast of his own home and it’s stature.
Macleod challenged his fellow guests and naysayers to accompany him to Skye to see for themselves.
His loyal men led them all to MacLeods Tables, the two flat topped mountains in the backdrop here. He stood and claimed this was his dining table, his loyal men were more precious than any gold candlestick and the heavens themselves his dining hall.

The site dates back to the 13th century, but the remains of the building are of 15th- and 16th-century origin. One tradition is that the castle was built by the Danes and another states that the Mackinnons held the castle from Alexander III, as a reward for their valour at the Battle of Largs.
Scenes from Outlander was filmed here with A number of locations used in Dunure. The best known is the harbour which was transformed into the port where Jamie and Claire once again meet Jared, and board the Artemis for their journey to Jamaica.
The same harbour also served as the port where Bree and Roger start their journeys to the colonies. However, the beach and castle next to the harbour, were also used. Scenes where Claire and Jamie watch young Ian swim out to Silkies’ Island and and moments on the island were filmed there respectively.
The surrounding countryside was also believed to have been used for scenes set near Ardsmuir prison.

Located about 12 miles north of Glasgow this present day castle ruin was built between 1837 and 1841. Originally it was designed as a family home but in 1927 the castle and estate was converted into a hospital for people with learning disabilities. The castle was used to house the nurses who worked on the estate.
Whilst operating as a hospital there were many reports of people being treated poorly and over crowding issues and in 2002 the hospital was permanently closed. In 2008 the castle was ruined in a large fire. Giving end to a castle that was marked in sadness and controversy.

Castle Tioram was built in the mid 13th century and extended in the 14th century as a testament to the independent rule of Rough Bounds by the Clanranalds, Lords of the Isles. It is situated in a strategic location on a rocky tidal island of Eilean Tioram at the confluence of Loch Moidart and the River Shiel, occupying the whole summit of the rock in Moidart.
The Castle is surrounded by a pentagonal, round angled, curtain wall dating from 13th century with later modifications. The curtain wall has a barrel vaulted entrance facing landward (northeast) with a small machicolation above (i.e. a floor opening to allow discharge of objects onto attackers of the castle). There was also a back entrance (a postern), that was later blocked in during the late 17th century.
The main building inside the curtain wall consists of an apartment block above a cellar, dating from the early 17th century, extending an earlier wooden feasting hall asnd small 14th century tower. The building has large window openings, a projecting gabled stair tower (stair turret) and large internal apartments. On one side, the building supports an additional storey containing corbelled bartizans and castellation.
