Located about 12 miles north of Glasgow this present day castle ruin was built between 1837 and 1841. Originally it was designed as a family home but in 1927 the castle and estate was converted into a hospital for people with learning disabilities. The castle was used to house the nurses who worked on the estate.
Whilst operating as a hospital there were many reports of people being treated poorly and over crowding issues and in 2002 the hospital was permanently closed. In 2008 the castle was ruined in a large fire. Giving end to a castle that was marked in sadness and controversy.
