Each year, British Columbia’s rivers flood with the silver and deep crimson of wild salmon– the lifeblood of our coastal forests and First Nations communities. Their perilous struggle upstream feeds bears, wolves, and groves of ancient trees. But all it takes is one infected fish from any of the region’s salmon farms to spark an outbreak of sea lice or a deadly virus.
Farmed fish are prone to a host of insidious pathogens that find their way into wild populations through open water farming practices known as net pen aquaculture. In the next few days, Canada Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray (@joycemurraymp) must decide whether or not to end open water net pen aquaculture.
Please join me in urging her to make the right decision! Tag @joycemurraymp in the comments below and ask her NOT to renew the licenses and help us protect the future of our wild salmon!
