The Stooges-The Stooges. 1969 Elektra Records, USA. Original west coast pressing(Monarch). Sometime in 2006, I received an email invitation from The Stooges management to attend a filming for an internet series on Yahoo!. This took place at Fox studios in Century City, California. It was this version of The Stooges, with Mike Watt replacing the deceased Dave Alexander. It was two sets, with a Question and Answer in between. It was here I personally witnessed Jim Osterburg transform into Iggy Pop. It was a small studio, with about 100 people watching them perform. I was situated above the stage, behind drummer Scott Asheton. Fro. My vantage point, I could see the band while the film crew was getting ready. Jim was mellow, just sitting back and talking. When it was showtime, Jim quickly turned into Iggy, and by the time he hit the stage, the films director wanted to wait to get whatever perfect for the filming. Iggy turns to Scott, and yells “FUCK THIS GUY, LETS GO!!!l” Niw, I’m standing five feet above Scott, and only twenty feet from Iggy. They blasted right into “Down On The Street”. They finished, and the director wanted to make adjustments. Iggy yells at Scott again “FUCK THIS GUY, LET’S GO” and they rip into “No Fun”. This goes on for a half an hour. The Stooges leave the stage. The director sets up chairs for the Q&A. Iggy turns back into Jim, with a very calm demeanor. He sings old blues songs a cappella, with a very wide range in his vocals. He answers one great question from the audience-“If You had to do the peanut butter smear again, what brand would you choose?” His answer -Jif! Second set Jim turned back into Iggy, and cussed out the entire production team. I haven’t been able to find this performance online, but I’d love to see it. #thestooges#iggypop#iggyandthestooges#punk#punkrock#punkrecords#punkvinyl#stevesstackofrecords#nowspinning#vinyligclub
The Stooges-Declaration Of War: The Best Of The Funhouse Sessions. 1999 “Rhino Homemade” Records, USA. Unofficial release. This is parts of the 7 CD box set Rhino put out in 1999 with all twelve reels of the May 1970 sessions for the Stooges second album “Fun House”. These are outtakes that didn’t make the cut for the original LP. This contains the two songs-“Slide(Slidin’ The Blues) and “Lost In The Future” that didn’t end up on the original LP. In my opinion , Elektra Records put together the absolute best takes and songs for the original LP. The versions presented here are just a bit different, and the two “lost” tracks aren’t up to snuff. That’s not to say they aren’t absolutely brilliant-I am writing about outtakes of perhaps the greatest rock LP in the 20th Century. This is well worth finding. I bought this at the Bomp! Records warehouse in Burbank when this was released. I haven’t listened to this in a very long time. What a fucking great band at the height of their powers. “Iggy And The Stooges”, a whole different animal that came to be two years after this is debatably the only band that’s better. #thestooges#iggyandthestooges#iggypop#funhouse#unofficial#punk#punkrock#punkvinyl#punkrecords#ronasheton#stevesstackofrecords#vinyligclub#nowspinning@paulmkelly72@the.analogue.revolution
