Remnants of old growth coastal cedar forest along Willapa Bay. The refuge consists of over 17,000 acres of tidelands, temperate rainforest, ocean beaches, sloughs, and streams. Willapa National Wildlife Refuge preserves habitat for spawning salmon, migrating shorebirds and waterfowl, and threatened species such as the western snowy plover and marbled murrelet. It’s the place to see what the Pacific Northwest looked like over 100 years ago, and the place to go when needing to feel settled. #naselle#willapabay#willapanationalwildliferefuge#habitat#preservation#theplacetogo

First Presbyterian Church in Sag Harbor, New York, also known as Old Whaler's Church, is a historic and architecturally notable Presbyterian church built in 1844 in the Egyptian Revival style. The church is Sag Harbor's "most distinguished landmark." The facade has been described as "the most important (surviving) example of Egyptian revival style in the United States," and "the best example of the Egyptian Revival style in the U.S. today. The church was designed by Minard Lafever in an Egyptian Revival style that includes Greek Revival elements. With its original steeple, 185 feet high, it was the tallest structure on Long Island when built. The steeple was destroyed by the Great New England Hurricane of 1938. Although many lament the loss, architectural historian Richard Carrot believes that the removal of the steeple was "successful", in that it left "a more 'Egyptian' building."
The church is located at 44 Union Street, within the historic Sag Harbor Village District, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1994. It is the only such landmark in Sag Harbor. The church's tripartite facade evokes the massive trapezoidal pylons of Egyptian temples. The deep cornice is crested with a crenelation of blubber spades, referring to the whaling industry that created the wealth of the village. #sagharbor#longisland#thehamptons#oldwhalerschurch#egyptianrevival#architecturephotography#greekrevival#minardlafever#archilovers#archihunter#archidrone#jmhdroning#crenelation#blubberspade#preservation#ca1844 📸🚁6slides
Fireworks are an integral part of Fourth of July celebrations; the festivities just wouldn’t be the same without them. While setting off fireworks is a lot of fun, it comes with potential negative environmental effects that are often overlooked.
Here are three ways you can make sure your fireworks celebration has a minimal impact on the environment:
- Clean up after your celebration. Don’t leave your fireworks debris in the street. After making sure it’s safe to approach the area, sweep up any leftover material and place it in a trash can. Never hose fireworks debris down storm drains as the polluted wastewater can enter streams and affect the environment and wildlife. It’s also illegal, and can come with a hefty fine.
- Only use fireworks in good weather. This means avoiding setting off fireworks if it has rained recently and the ground is wet. Fireworks can soak into soil in those conditions. Refrain from setting them off in extremely dry or windy weather, too, due to wildfire risk.
- Use green transportation. Bike, walk, or use public transportation to get to your favorite fireworks show. Not only will it help you avoid traffic and get some exercise, but you will help minimize the holiday’s carbon footprint.
We wish you a happy and safe Independence Day!
