Horseshoe Magnet with Keeper: magnetic field lines connect North to South poles from one side of the U shaped magnet 🧲, through the air, to the other- and magnetic viewing film reveals the strong fields of this vintage magnet. However, when a bar of soft iron is attached, the magnetic field lines prefer to pass through the bar, and the field is then concentrated in the bar and significantly reduced in the surrounding air- basically shutting off the field around the magnet as seen by the viewing film. Such a bar is called a “keeper” which serves to contain the field and also persevere the strength of the magnet when not in use. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get this type of magnet and some magnetic viewing film as well as other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun#magnetism#magnaview#magneview#magneviewfilm#physics#physicsfun#physicstoy#science#magnets#Bfield#electromagnetism#magneticdomains#magneticfield#nickel#ferromagnet#neodymium#science#scienceisawesome
Caustic Projection Optical Element: the intricate geometries of light due to refraction through various curved surfaces of transparent plastic. A 488 nm cyan laser pointer is refracted through an optical element with lumpy surface features which create this aurora/nebula effect. When light rays refract through a curved surface they concentrate into bright patches called caustics, often with cusp singularities (sharp points) and intricate threads of shadow. ➡ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get this and other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun#physics#physicstoy#optics#physicsfun#additiveoptics#opticalelements#caustics#laser#laserpointer#refraction#lightrays#science#scienceisawesome
Meteorite with CAIs: oldest known solid material in our solar system- the white substance in this meteorite is called Calcium Aluminum rich inclusions (CAIs) and radiometric dating sets the formation time at 4.5673 billion years ago- a few million years older than the rest of the meteorite material and thought to be the first solid compounds formed in the protoplanetary disk before the planets even existed. This substance is most common in carbonaceous chondrites type CV3 as found in this 8 gram sample which was cut and polished on one side. This particular sample was found in 2012 in Northwest Africa. Only the molecules and atoms themselves are older than this CAI material! ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get a chunk of meteorite with CAIs and many other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun#meteorite#carbonaceous#chondrite#CAIs#oldestmaterial#deeptime#physics#physicstoy#astronomy#astrophysics#physicsfun#geophysics#geophysicstoy#solarsystem#radiometricdating#inclusion#oldestrock#rockhound#ancient#mineral#geology#science#scienceisawesome
