needed this run today —
a little 2-miler this afternoon to kickstart my summer camp running! i’m all settled in for the next couple months and getting excited to welcome campers back to the forest once again! my running will be sporadic as I try to squeeze runs in here and there in between all the summer camp silliness, so i’ll take every mile i can get!
been feeling the heaviness of the state of the country lately. been hard to feel motivated to run as I watch decision after decision unfold in SCOTUS. waking up last week to the news that in 20+ states people with a uterus’s bodily autonomy was stripped away was hard, and it continues to be hard to process the direction that could go in state decisions to come.
been taking days at a time off social media to catch a break from the doomscrolling. figuring out what i can do behind closed doors with the time and resources i have.
a 25-minute run was exactly what me, my anxiety, my body, and my sense of joy needed today. I honestly was just thankful that the desire to run was present. I was eager to listen to my body today and get out there.
things gets heavy sometimes — running helps. working at my summer camp helps, too — a place I love so dearly and find so much joy in being at.
hope you’re finding joy in your miles and days the best you can, too!
2.13 miles — 24:44 — 11:38/mi

Photo by @stephenwilkes | There’s a multitude of beautiful landscapes everywhere you look in Olympic National Park in Washington State. On assignment for @natgeo, I made this photograph while en route to the trailhead out to Shi Shi Beach. Processing this image in black-and-white, I was inspired by the tones of some of the early prints of Yosemite Valley by the great Carleton Watkins. Photo by @stephenwilkes | Recently I returned from a trip to Washington State, where I photographed the coast for an upcoming issue of the magazine. It was a special treat to see such an abundance of bald eagles along the way—and truly staggering to observe the grace and scale of these magnificent birds. This eagle carries remnants of a fish back to the nest. To see more from my travels near and far follow me @stephenwilkes. #eagle#pacificnorthwest#birds#natgeo#flight#photography
