The Singh Twins
2018, digital artwork on archival paperwork
16 x 12 in.
The Singh Twins are British artists who work together on their artworks. Their work draws on both traditional Indian tradition, Western medieval illuminated manuscripts and contemporary Western culture.
This artwork depicts the tenth Sikh Guru (Gobind Singh ji) as the creator of the community of warrior saints known as the Khalsa, in 1699 which bestowed Sikhs with a unique visible identity (the five ‘K’s) and code of living underpinned by a belief in the equality of all and a commitment to defending the downtrodden and fighting injustice of all kinds. The first Khalsa initiation ceremony is depicted below the main portrait of Guru Gobind Singh which itself is surrounded by motifs symbolising aspects of his work, teachings and personality. The artwork combines traditional Indian miniature and Art Nouveau styles.
